boys to hear top professionals perform live, and then perform with Nina as she featured as soloist with the Showband to conclude the evening.
Term 4 continued with the Spring Concert, which featured all the intermediate ensembles. At the time of writing, the Summer Prom and the Carol Service are still to come, to be followed by our Old Boys singing with our wonderful extension choir, Concordis, founded by Andrew Hunter in 1998, as they perform Rutter’ s Gloria and a host of Christmas music, accompanied by the Old Scotch Symphony Orchestra on 10 December.
There was, of course, much more music than space could provide: the Music in Miniature concerts that feature small ensembles, the recitals, Jazz at Dizzies and much more.
There has been some exceptional music this year, performed at genuinely high levels. While I am privileged to conduct some of the main performances, I must pay tribute to our parents who encourage and cajole the boys, to the remarkable staff at Scotch( and musicians from outside Scotch) who teach individual lessons, and to the staff who direct the younger ensembles and take sectional rehearsals.
A particular strength stems from the fact that virtually all music staff perform professionally, and although some have retired from the concert stage, all have been there. It is this level of musicianship and musical insight from the staff that, I hope, infects our young musicians, and underpins the notion that in the Music School we are all musicians, striving for artistic excellence, at our various levels of development, whether we are eight years old, or 80!
Thank you for coming to our concerts, and for helping to keep music live in our school. JOHN FERGUSON – DIRECTOR OF MUSIC
