God has given us minds and he expects us to use them. The Bible tells us that we are to love God with all our heart, our soul, our mind and our strength. Like Jesus we are to grow daily in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. Mary and Joseph searched frantically for their son, only to find him in the precincts of the temple, discussing the meaning of the Scriptures with the great rabbis and teachers of his day. As Jesus grew in understanding of God and this world so we are to follow in his footsteps. At Scotch College, intellectual pursuits are not trivial. Boys are encouraged to identify their passions and to develop an all-round interest in this, their world. In an age when the mind and the intellect are downplayed and where the emotional seems to hold sway, it is important for the boys to nurture the mind. By seeking understanding, they will prove to be well- rounded individuals who will be able to critique the world and the ideas that arise, and provide leadership and light to the next generation. www.scotch.vic.edu.au Great Scot 7
