Johnston Charles Howard Rubie 100 4 24 Sidney Pascoe *As at 1 August 2018 THE SCOTCH COLLEGE BOAT CLUB TURNS 150 On Thursday 16 April 1868 Scotch boy William Robertson Skene wrote: ‘The Scotch College have [sic] got up a boating club, this was the first night of their rowing – I am not in the club as no boy is allowed to go on to the Yarra until he has learnt to swim – Stevens saved a young boy from drowning in the Yarra this evening’. Skene (right) was born at Mount Mitchell, Ballarat, on 24 May 1850 and attended Scotch from 1863 to 1868. He kept a diary in 1868 that chronicled the beginnings of rowing at Scotch, resulting in the challenge to Melbourne Grammar School that started the Head of the River on 18 June 94 1868. Scotch is the only school to have rowed in every Head of the River, which has been rowed continuously since 1868, and it is also the most successful, with 45 wins. Although Skene’s diary does not state when the boat club was founded (nor does any other known source), 16 April 1868 seems as good a date as any to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Scotch College Boat Club. Skene was a landlubber who played in the 1868 1st XVIII. He became a grazier, and died at East St Kilda on 9 January 1901. His great-grandson Donald Skene Larkin (SC 1959-62) was also at Scotch.
