Maine, America, the over-the-top American accents and acting were
thrown out the window, and instead we focused on trying to bring the
most genuine performance possible.
We still played the comedy in the writing in each scene, though we
aimed to play our scenes as if we were actually being the character,
reacting as we would if we were not acting. Though everything was
scripted and we knew the outcomes of each scene, everyone needed to
be in the moment.
The play also used music. We had a quartet who sang a capella
country songs. Country music was used because it captures something
of the absurdity inherent in the play script. If you listen closely, country
music creates poetry and images which make sense only to those of us in
love or lovelorn.
Although at first it was incredibly hard, as we got to know our partners
and the rest of the cast the scenes began to develop and grow into
intimate and intense vignettes. Everybody involved was so proud of what
we achieved. Everyone, including the cast, the crew and all teachers,
became a tight-knit group.
Overall, Almost, Maine was a hilarious and thought-provoking show
which everyone involved will remember for a very long time.
