EDITOR GREAT SCOT
This edition of Great Scot is dedicated to
remembering the life and achievements of
Scotch’s greatest son, Sir John Monash (1881),
on the centenary of his knighthood on the
battlefields of Northern France on 12 August
1918 by King George V, in tribute to the leading
role he played in the battle of Amiens, forerunner
to the Allied defeat of the German forces.

His love for country, school and service for
the betterment of our world is a reflection of the
overarching values the School endorses. The
recently remodelled Service Immersion Program
is explored in this edition, as are the Christian
values underpinning the School’s ideals of
personal responsibility and service to the wider
community and the world.
The School’s commitment to enable each
boy to achieve his potential, with the intention
to nurture and stimulate passion, is reflected in
the pages of this edition, and indeed of every
edition, of Great Scot. We celebrate ensemble
and individual achievements in musical offerings
through every season; outstanding drama
performances; a Year 12 student receiving a
Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award; interschool and
house sporting events; scientific discoveries of
new crystal formations; connections with our
Tiwi friends; and a continued commitment to our
World Vision partnership in Zambia.

horizons are evident in the rich offerings of tours
and expeditions – to other parts of Australia,
Europe and the United Kingdom.
For inspiration, our current boys need look
no further than this edition of Great Scot for
many examples of service for the greater good
provided by Old Scotch Collegians and the
wider Scotch community. Eighteen members of
the Scotch Family are known to have received
2018 Queen’s Birthday awards for outstanding
service in a variety of fields; an Old Boy doctor
has developed an innovative online educational
model for doctors and other health professionals
working with people with dementia; another has
received the unique honour of the Key to the City
of Manningham for his lifetime of service to his
local community; and a young Old Boy is serving
his fellow students as President of the Monash
Parkville student union. As always, the flame of
service for the greater good burns brightly in the
Scotch Family.
