News ‘We need to be considerate and not think for our own good’ Year 6 boys' views on service Seventeen Year 6 boys were asked to provide practical examples of the theme of this edition of Great Scot: service for the greater good. Their views, covering a wide spectrum of service in many spheres, show they have an excellent grasp of the concept of service, as it applies at Scotch and in the wider world. Here is what they said: ‘Service for the greater good empowers and drives humanity. It is the reason why many are alive today. A good example of this would be Fred Hollows. He pioneered his area and gave vision to countless people. Without him, many more would be legally blind today. These acts for the community are a fundamental part of humanity. 22 ABOVE: AT THE WAR MEMORIAL IN CANBERRA: TOM FARRER AND NATHANAEL CHAN ‘Without service for the greater good, who knows what our world would be like today. If John Monash had only thought about personal success, the country itself would be different to what it is today. It is now the next generation’s job to continue these acts. In our School, we perform acts such as helping younger peers, doing volunteer programs and helping the community through fundraising. ‘In conclusion, we cannot live as a society without service for the greater good.’ TOM FARRER and NED SUTHERLAND ‘We have recently been discussing how we can assist and serve others. Many have been contributing to the people in need of help or assistance, but they need more help. At Scotch College we have been doing our best to assist the people in need. For example BFG (Big Friendly Guys) help in the lower primary grades during lunchtimes, to help little kids with their problems. ‘We also do a lot of fundraising at this school. We fundraise for many charities and hospitals like the Royal Children’s Hospital and the RSPCA. Everyone donates a gold coin or more. Earlier this year we went to Canberra and learnt about government. During this trip we went to the War Memorial to acknowledge the people who served our country to make it great. Now we need to focus on the next generation to make Australia even better.’ DUC LUU and OLIVER SPARKS ‘Most of the time we usually think of ourselves rather than thinking about others.
