Our table tennis team won five games and lost four, finishing fifth
overall. It was the first year of increased team members in the firsts
competition, and our additional team members really seemed to
enjoy the opportunity to compete at this level.
Volleyball had one of ‘those’ seasons. The team did a lot right but
didn’t get a great deal of reward for effort. After winning the opening
two rounds, it looked set to break into the top four. Unfortunately,
despite winning many sets and being right in every game, we were
unable to close games out. Competing hard, the team finished in
seventh position.
Despite a very slow start, our futsal team was able to put a
winning streak of four games together to conclude the season.
Unfortunately, this was not enough to make great inroads on the
ladder, and we finished in sixth place.
Sailing had another interrupted season but there were some
positive signs, with an increased number of boys participating and
some good form shown in the couple of lead-up fixtures in which we
competed. Unfortunately, the state championships were cancelled.
Lawn bowls had six teams competing in the APS championship.
Our C team performed best in the open division, finishing third.
Orienteering finished a very creditable second behind Camberwell
Grammar in the Roger Slade Trophy. Scotch’s three squash teams
were highly competitive, but the competition was stopped as the
finals series was about to take place. The Gold and Blue teams each
won three games and lost one.
The cycling squad again performed strongly in the Victorian
Interschool Cycling Series, finishing third, with Callum Ross (Year
12) winning several of the B grade senior events throughout the
season. Away from school, Alex Jones (Year 10) continued to show
his immense potential with selection for Victoria in the National Track
Cycling Competition.
Our boys achieved some excellent individual performances
competing for Old Scotch Athletics Club in the Athletics Victoria
State Championships. Scotch boys won a total of four medals,
including a gold medal to Jean-Philippe Soulie (Year 11) in the under
18 1500m, in a time of 1.59; a silver medal to Ronghao Chen (Year
9) in the under 15 100 metres (11.77 seconds), and bronze medals
to Hugh Bailey (Year 9) in the under 15 shot put and Joshua Rubins
(Year 12) in the under 18 100m. Unfortunately, the nationals were
also cancelled which impacted on the boys’ opportunity to mix it
with Australia’s best athletes.
Touch football began the season positively with a big win in round
one against Caulfield Grammar, but a levelling try to Trinity Grammar
in the final minute and a couple of close losses impacted on the
team’s finals chances. It finished mid-table, with two wins, one draw
and three losses. Nick Hocking (Year 12) excelled as Captain and
was also rewarded with state selection.
Final positions in APS summer sport were:
Badminton – third
Cricket – sixth
Diving – no result
Futsal – sixth
Rowing – no result
Swimming – no result
Table tennis – fifth
Tennis – second
Volleyball – seventh
Although the traditional APS v AGS representative games did not
take place, teams were named, based on performances throughout
the season, and the following Scotch boys were selected:
Badminton: Doric Tu, Jacky Zhang
Table tennis: Nicholas Teoh, Gordon Jin
Tennis: Thomas Patton
Volleyball: Toby Argent
I take this opportunity to thank all those involved with our
summer sports program. The support and commitment of the TICs,
administration staff, coaches and managers is critical to enabling us
to provide a meaningful program. Our Grounds and Maintenance
staff deserve thanks for the immense work they undertake to
prepare such excellent facilities for the boys to use.
I also thank all of our boys for their contribution to the sport
program. It is clear that the boys value sport, and place great pride
in wearing the school colours each week. Let’s hope we will see
the boys back in action at some stage during the upcoming
winter season.
