The former farmland was dominated by a pine tree-clad hill. The hill was surmounted by Glen House, an 1870s mansion, where the Hawthorn Junior School opened in 1916. After the new Junior School buildings opened in 1918, Glen House became a boarding house. The August 1920 edition of The Scotch Collegian published an aerial photo of the school that year. It shows Glenferrie Road on the left, leading to the railway gates at Kooyong. Pine trees surround Glen House on the hill. The Junior School and its oval have been completed and the Lower Oval has already been established near Gardiners Creek. The site of the Senior School is ready for building. The Collegian published an account of the ceremony on 5 March 1920.
