DURGA KAMTE EDITOR GREAT SCOT This year will undoubtedly be viewed as highly significant, with the extraordinary changes wrought on us all by the COVID-19 pandemic. But over its 169-year history, our school community has met and overcome crises resulting from war, Depression and epidemic, and has emerged stronger and more resolute in upholding our characteristic values and traditions: meeting the needs of each boy, nurturing interests and inculcating values that promote society’s greater good. That these values resonate with our boys is evident in social justice initiatives, such as the Sony Camp, in which, during holiday time, boys and girls helped children with significant disabilities. Participation in the Walk for Women showed students’ commitment to equal opportunity, and the 24 Hour Hike raised funds for a charity associated with Down syndrome. Early in the year there was welcome news, including excellent VCE and ATAR results, an exhilarating tour of the US by the Scotch Symphony Orchestra, and strong results in mooting, chess and an ASEAN conference. But students and staff have since been understandably disappointed as the pandemic has forced the cancellation of sport, music and drama commitments. In the last week of Term 1, Scotch’s learning environment moved to an online platform, with the use of Zoom and the conference facility of Canvas, the Scotch Learning Management System. The Scotch teaching team, ably supported by the IT department and the E-Learning Coordinators, managed the challenges – and opportunities – of remote teaching, using a combination of video, audio and document- sharing technologies. Responses by students and parents have been overwhelmingly positive. During the Term 1 holidays, teachers refined their skills in online learning tools to prepare for what is their core commitment: to share their interests and passions to achieve the best outcomes for our boys.
