INVITATION TO ALL SCOTCH GOLFERS
Friday 8 May 2020
THE NATIONAL GOLF CLUB – LONG ISLAND
The links between Scotch and Wesley go back a
long way, and include the time during World War
II when the schools shared Scotch’s facilities
after the Army occupied Wesley’s campus.
Scotch and Wesley have always maintained a
good relationship and a friendly rivalry.
We are extending an invitation to members
of both schools' communities to participate
in the 2020 Scotch Family Golf Day.

HOW ‘BOB’S BOYS’ BROUGHT HOME
THE SHIELD
AT THE LAUNCH OF BOB’S BOYS. LEFT TO RIGHT: JOHN MONTGOMERY (’60), DON MOYES (’50), BOB COWPER (’58) AND PETER GIBBS (’58)
Fifty years after Bob Cowper (’58) led
the Victorian team to victory in the 1969/70
Sheffield Shield, a book has been written
about the team’s fairytale success that
season, achieved despite six regular members
of the team being absent, participating in a
gruelling Test tour of Sri Lanka (then known
as Ceylon), India and South Africa.
The book, Bob’s Boys – How Victoria won
the 1969-70 Sheffield Shield by Ken Piesse
and Mark Browning, includes details of each
match the Victorians played that season,
along with stories about the players and
whimsical reflections on the season by the
players themselves.
The book was launched during an
Australian Cricket Society function at the
Kelvin Club in Melbourne on 25 October.
Twelve members of the 1969/70 Victorian
team attended, including Bob Cowper, who
in February 1966 had scored 307 in a Test
against England at the MCG, still the highest
score by an Australian in a Test at the ‘G.
Bob spoke at the launch, along with his
teammates.
For Bob, the Shield win was a satisfying
end to his first-class cricket career. He
retired after that season at the age of 27 to
concentrate on a career in business.
