The 1974 School Captain, JOHN DE RAVIN has applied his knack for numbers to compiling 100 wealth-building strategies for all ages. An actuary, John worked for insurance and reinsurance companies as well as the Australian Government Actuary’ s Office. Since retiring last year, he has researched and written a book on a subject he is passionate about: personal finances.
Slow and Steady is designed to help readers choose financial strategies that are right for them, providing background information and how to put strategies into place. It mentions the considerations to be taken before embarking on any financial strategy, and there are almost 500 references to helpful online sources.
‘ About 80 per cent of Australians don’ t use a financial planner and don’ t currently intend to use one. So it isn’ t easy for the great majority of Aussies to know what strategies are available, or to understand what they need to do to put strategies in place,’ John told Great Scot. He has attended six masters world championships over the past nine years.
‘ There were 63 competitors this year in my division, the Laser Radial Grand Masters( 55 to 64 years of age). After finishing in the top 10 the previous two years, I thought I’ d step up my program to see if it could make a difference. Finally I won, ahead of an Italian and a Brit.’
A forest scientist( B. For. Sci., M. For. Sci.) with a family background in agriculture, ROWAN REID(‘ 79) specialised in the field of agroforestry: the integration of multipurpose trees into farming systems. While a lecturer at the University of Melbourne he developed a Eureka Prize-winning farmer education course called the Australian Master TreeGrower program, accessed by more than 2000 Australian farmers and also delivered offshore.
Rowan’ s own Bambra Agroforestry Farm in Western Victoria is set up as a 42-hectare outdoor classroom for farmers, scientists, students and tree lovers, and is a living laboratory for his own learning. In his new book Heartwood: The art and science of growing trees for conservation and profit, Rowan argues that felling a tree for timber can be an act of conservation.‘ Native trees were cleared from farms because they were considered worthless,’ he told Great Scot.‘ If 10 per cent of every farm was strategically replanted to productive trees, we would have a more sustainable and profitable farming sector,’ he says.
