Strings, Amberley Bremner, arranged the Carnival
of the Animals by Saint-Saëns for strings, with the
string parts cleverly written for players at different
levels of their development, while still all playing
simultaneously. It was an exceptional piece of
work, and the boys had a wonderful musical
experience.
As we hurled ourselves into Term 4, and the
exam season, we presented the final concert
that involved the departing Year 12s. The Jazz
Cabaret was a great night that featured our top
Show Bands. As usual we had a guest artist,
and this year we were treated to the marvellous
singing of Raleigh Williams, accompanied by
her own quartet. The boys also had a chance
to work with Raleigh, who clearly enjoyed her
performance with the Show Band. Charlie
Schilling, recipient of the Howard Belling Prize for
Jazz Studies, had a particularly memorable night,
performing superbly as a soloist with Raleigh.
At the time of writing we still have the annual
Spring Concert to go. This concert features
all the large ensembles that do not play at
Foundation Day, and is essentially the same as
the Intermediate Concert that forms part of the
Autumn Season in Term 2. It is always a great
pleasure to see how far these ensembles have
progressed during the year.
This concert is organised by the Head of
Woodwind, Peter Rickard. It will be Peter’s last
concert as he will be retiring at the end of the
year after 40 years of distinguished service to
the school. We will miss his diligent organisation,
insight and quirky sense of humour. We wish him
well.
As always, we will conclude the year with
the 27th Summer Prom concert, and the Carol
Service. We will then get a break for Christmas,
before setting off to Spain with the orchestra in
January – and the music lingers on ‘like the catch
of a song’!
