Successful
Psychology

with
Strathcona
Scotch’s Unit 3 and 4 Psychology boys
enjoyed revision activities with a difference,
together with girls from Strathcona Girls’
Grammar School throughout the past term and
a half. It was an excellent opportunity for the
Scotch boys to gain some insight into the work
required to perform at an optimum level, in a
subject where girls dominate the large cohort
(approximately 16,000 students) in a 3:1 ratio.
The activities started with an interactive trivia
night in the Boykett Room on 11 August. The
trivia session not only involved socialisation, but
also teamwork, revision and learning strategies.

This kick-started the positive interactions they
were all experiencing.
On the evening of 19 September, Scotch
hosted Roger Edwards, the previous Chief
Assessor of the VCAA Psychology exam. Roger
gave an informative lecture summary to the
students, during which innovative questions
were presented and issues discussed. Next,
Strathcona hosted a revision session tackling
difficult Psychology exam questions during
the Term 3 break. This challenging, hands-on
session was also well received by all students.
Finally, during the first week of Term 4, the
students enjoyed hearing about and experiencing
sleep brain waves from Joanne O’Kane, a
sleep scientist at Epworth Sleep Centre. This
made the review of Unit 4 topic of ‘Sleep and
Consciousness’ very real and most relevant.
Throughout these activities, the students
thoroughly enjoyed and enhanced their
combined approach to revision, as a joint initiative
between Strathcona and Scotch in the field of
Psychology.
