Perelberg Award to a boy who
‘fully exemplifies Scotch spirit’
Fraser Sutherland – a Year 12 boy who has
immersed himself in all things Scotch, and has
always made the needs of others his first priority
– has received the 2017 Perelberg Award.
The award, for ‘exemplary Scotch spirit’, is in
memory of Ashley Perelberg (’92), who died in
1993 during his first year at university. The award
is granted one year to a current student, or to one
who left during the previous year, and the next
year to an Old Scotch Collegian. This year the
award goes to a current Scotch boy.
Announcing Fraser’s award, School Principal
Tom Batty said, in part:
‘Since joining Scotch in Year 7, Fraser has fully
engaged with the school while seeking to involve
himself beyond our immediate offering. In addition
to full colours in touch rugby and rugby,
Fraser has received half colours for debating.

This year he was appointed a School Prefect and
House Captain of Selby Smith.
‘Fraser has undertaken a cricket exchange to
King Edward School, Birmingham, participated
in the 24 Hour Hike and travelled to Zambia
to witness first-hand the impact of the Scotch
community’s commitment to education in
Kapumfi and Chitulika.
‘A passionate member of the Indigenous
Partnership Programme, Fraser, has spent
time on the Tiwi Islands, working closely with
the students of Tiwi College. Fraser has been
a member of the Scotch-at-Cowes Committee
and assisted with the Year 8 Big Ideas lectures.
Whilst in Year 11, Fraser volunteered to attend the
Year 9 retreat. He has also committed to assisting
with the Sony Disability Camp. Next year he will
undertake a gap year at Tiwi College.
‘In all such engagements, Fraser has acted,
not for any plaudits or social kudos, but rather for
the benefit of those around him. I am sure you
would agree that Fraser fully exemplifies Scotch
spirit; that he is committed to challenging those
things which need challenging and supporting
those which need supporting; and is indeed a
worthy recipient of this year’s Perelberg Award.’
Ashley Perelberg’s family presented a silver
sculpture depicting the penguin parade at Phillip
Island, which was inspired by Ashley’s devotion
to the Cowes summer camps. Fraser Sutherland
received a silver replica of this sculpture.
