ALLARD, James Moore
(’37) James’ son, Michael
(SC 1962-73), wrote:
James Moore Allard
was born at Heidelberg on
12 February 1920. Entering
Scotch in 1927, James was
1932 co-Dux of the Junior School with his
best friend, Rex Dawborn. James was a 1937
Probationer, and a King’s Scout. Also at Scotch
were his brothers Sir Gordon Laidlaw Allard
(SC 1920-26) and David Macdonald Allard (SC
1925-34), half-brother John (SC 1948-60), son
Michael, nephew Peter (SC 1948-56), Thorn
grandsons Edward (SC 1990-98) and Nicholas
(SC 1996-2001), and great-nephew Christopher
(SC 1979-88).
A member of the Old Scotch Hockey Club,
James also led the Old Scotch Collegians’
Rover Crew. He was one of the first men to
climb above the snowline on Mount Buller and
the Bogong High Plains to ski these mountains
before ski-tows.
Joining the militia in 1939, in 1941 James
transferred to the AIF. He had close shaves, as
former militia comrades went to Tobruk. Two
weeks before sailing for Singapore, it fell to the
Japanese. He enlisted in the 39th battalion, but
was transferred out before it ended up on the
Kokoda Trail. James served in the 2/4th tank
regiment in Bougainville, and, postwar, became
President of the 2/4th Association. He joined
the Citizen Military Forces in the 4th/19th Prince
of Wales’ Light Horse Regiment, and became a
Lieutenant Colonel and Commanding Officer of
the 8/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles.
On 27 November 1948 James married
Shirley Kettle in the Napier Anglican Cathedral,
New Zealand. As well as their son, Michael,
they also had two daughters. James married
Mrs Shirley Freda (nee Woodgate) Burnett at
the Toorak Uniting Church on 19 January 1982.
They shared 35 wonderful years until her death
on 16 April 2017.
In 1977 James was a founding partner of
Allard & Shelton commercial real estate agents.
He was a member of the Savage Club, Royal
Melbourne Golf Club, the Melbourne Cricket
Club, and the Frankston Golf Club.
Till James’ last day, he maintained a quick
wit and a razor-sharp mind. He was a true
gentleman. His final months were spent at
Hawthorn Grange, Hawthorn, where he died
on 19 October 2018. He had been Scotch’s
14th oldest-known living Old Boy.

on banking and finance. Simon was active in
