of suggestions from boys that altered the design – simple but effective
ideas, such as two separate drinking stations and extra sandwich
machines at lunch.
Within each House, boys have a vital role in setting the culture
and tone of the lived experience, and so they have a major role in the
decision-making process. Senior boys run House activities such as
table tennis competitions, and boys have been the driving influence
behind the relatively new academic tutoring arrangements, with a literacy
and numeracy tutor now available weekly in each House. Boys are
consulted on dorm arrangements, social activities, House routines and,
more recently, have been involved in the preliminary discussions on the
potential new design for McMeckan and School Houses.
A flourishing residential community requires considered input from all
who share the lived experience. Boys and staff, through the necessity of
societal living, develop the rules, regulations and guidelines under which
they live. The authenticity of our commitment to the boys’ lived experience
ensures their voice is indeed alive and paramount in all we do on the Hill.
