Sport SNOWSPORTS SETS ITS SIGHTS ON THE YEAR AHEAD There’s a vibrant snowsports program in place for the Scotch Family One of the great joys for a teacher and parent in a place like Scotch is that we have such a broad and vibrant community, providing a place for our boys to find what it is they are truly good at, and excel at it. These passions become part of the boy’s voice – who he is and how he interacts with the world around him. Over my years as TIC of Snowsports at Scotch I have seen numerous boys embrace a love for skiing and snowboarding. Perhaps they thought cross country skiing was too hard, only to discover it was a great way to get fit and connect with mates; or they were just social skiers who discovered a passion for racing; or racers enjoying the chance not to train but to ski the trees with mates; or perhaps they had never been to the snow before, and had now begun what would become a lifelong love of skiing or boarding. As the Scotch snowsports community has grown over recent years, we have started to see more and more boys adding this element of the outdoors to their lives. The relationships built while riding the chairlift, interacting with elite coaches, sharing a story at the bottom of a run, 54 Great Scot Number 156 – April 2019 or meeting new friends in a ski lodge – all of these things add to who we are and how we see the world. Throughout the summer some of our community have been overseas to chase even more snow, as they prepare for the year ahead and challenge themselves to new territory. Boys have competed and trained in the USA, Canada and Europe. Particular congratulations go to William Maisano (Year 9), who has been selected to compete for the Australian under 16 team at the Whistler Cup in April; and to our head snowsports coach, Cam Bolton, who recently won his first World Cup event in Germany. We have a vibrant snowsports program for boys, and for Old Boys and parents in the Scotch Family through the Koomerang Ski Club, which has lodges on four different mountains. I hope to have the opportunity to see you out there this year. CAMERON CUTCHIE – TIC, SNOWSPORTS
