WELL ACROSS THE BOARD AND THE FAIRBAIRN CUP; SCOTCH’S WINNING 10A CREW AT THE FINISH LINE OF THE A FINAL. of broken race records and broken oars the first Scotch Collegian in 92 years to win the race three times, and the first Scotch rower since Guy Maxwell Yunghanns (1992, 1993 and 1994) to row in three 1st VIIIs. As it is extremely rare now for a Year 10 boy to make the 1st VIII, let alone be part of three winning crews, Marcus’ success is extraordinary, and he deserves full credit for his achievements. The Scotch 2nd VIII capped its dominant season with a strong victory in the second division, setting a new record of 6.00.93 in the heat, bettering the previous 2017 record of 6.01.56. The crew crossed the finish line 12.64 seconds ahead of St Kevin’s College with Brighton Grammar a further 3.75 seconds behind, third. Scotch’s 3rd VIII raced strongly to win the A final of their division, ahead of Melbourne Grammar and Brighton Grammar. The 4th VIII recorded a strong victory in the fourth division, despite their stroke man falling out of the boat prior to the race in the warm-up. Showing remarkable resilience, he got back into the boat, and stroked the boat with great composure to a resounding victory ahead of St Kevin’s and Melbourne Grammar. The crew rowed in the boat named in honour of Michael Robinson, a great supporter of Scotch College rowing over many decades, who sadly died in the week of the Head of the River. The Scotch 5th VIII had a technical issue and finished fifth, and the 6th VIII was fourth in the fourth eight division. This crew was made up 7. half of Year 10 rowers and half of senior athletes. As the crew included senior age group rowers, it raced in the senior fourth division, and deserve credit for a strong performance. In the Year 10 eight division 1 A final, the 10A crew fell behind a powerful St Kevin’s 10A crew by around a length at the 500m mark, before steadily rowing through, gaining the lead in the last 200m of the race. The 10B crew was placed fourth in the A final of the Year 10 division 2, and the 10C crew finished third in the division 3 A final. The 10D crew was second in the A final of the Year 10 division 4. Scotch had 15 Year 9 quad sculls racing across eight divisions. The 1st, 2nd , 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th Quads won their respective divisions. The 3rd Quad was placed second and the 7th Quad came third. There were many good performances from these crews, and many Scotch crews raced against higher ranked crews from other schools and performed extremely well. It was a strong performance by the entire Boat Club, and all athletes competed to the best of their ability. Thanks must go to all parents, the Cardinal Club, coaches, staff and boatmen for their dedication, support and passion, all of which ensures the Boat Club continues to function productively.
