A few years back I was drawn to the book Identity Crises , written by Ben Elton . Although not necessarily a regular reader of his works , I came across a conversation where Elton was being interviewed about his book . I have always remembered Elton saying that he pursued the story because he wanted to understand why in his view , ‘ everyone seemed to be so outraged in today ’ s world ’. This comment resonated with me so I purchased his book . Whether via social media , mainstream journalism or through the usual news channels , people appear stressed , ready to pounce and lack the common courtesy that one could once take for granted . Perhaps the good life is starting to unravel ? In composing this article , I couldn ’ t help but think that if the Scotch Family were to truly unite for a journey of significance , it was important that we possessed a shared understanding of our purpose and values . As such , what is it that unites the Scotch Family ? Before exploring this important question , I would first like to understand our society ’ s present challenges , and therefore our journey starts with an exploration of our ‘ brave new world ’, one characterised as the ‘ post-Christian West ’.
A BRAVE NEW WORLD
Today many Christian and non-Christian writers recognise that western society has essentially moved into new territory . Sadly , in looking at our present society , we see the impacts of expressive individualism . Indeed , one could be forgiven for thinking that the only absolute now cherished is one ’ s freedom to do whatever one wants at any old time .
However , this brave new world has infiltrated our society very slowly . It has most intentionally penetrated our traditions and cultures , and I think it is reasonable to suggest that today we live in a time of great experimentation ; a time that is unprecedented in our history .
