The 10A VIII came third in the A final of the Year 10 division 1 , while the 10B VIII rowed a strong middle 1000 metres to record a resounding win in the Year 10 division 2 A final , ahead of St Kevin ’ s and Melbourne Grammar School . The 10B crew ’ s victory gave coach Teddy Webster (’ 17 ) a fitting send-off , as he hangs up his megaphone after six years of coaching which followed five years ’ rowing in the program .
The 10C crew also recorded a wonderful victory in the Year 10 division 3 A final ahead of Xavier and Melbourne Grammar . The 10D crew rowed well to record second place in the Year 10 division 4 A final , an incredible result after a season of instability . In the Year 9 quad sculls , Scotch was enthusiastically represented by 12 crews , and while there were many strong performances , the 5th Quad was able to win the A final of division 5 , and the 6th Quad also won its final .
In the week following the Head of the River , the 1st and 10A VIIIs travelled to the purpose-built rowing course at Champion Lakes Regatta Centre in Perth to compete in the Australian Rowing Championships . The last time the nationals were held in Perth was 2012 , and this was therefore a unique experience for the boys to race at this venue , against crews from around Australia .
The 1st VIII performed well , qualifying for the A final . In a close race , the Scotch 1st VIII finished fourth , with St Ignatius Riverview ( NSW ) winning the national title in a time of 5.57.98 . In second place was Brisbane Boys ’ College , 2.84 seconds behind St Ignatius , with
St Peter ’ s College Adelaide 5.72 seconds further back in third . The Scotch crew was 1.45 seconds , around half a length , away from third place and a bronze medal , narrowly ahead of Geelong Grammar School which was 0.70 of a second behind in fifth place . Newington College ( NSW ) rounded out the final in sixth place .
The 10A crew also reached the A final of their event , the Under 17 Schoolboy Eight . In a hotly contested race , the crew was fourth at the 500 metre mark , and fifth at the 1000 and 1500 metre marks . With 500 metres left , the crew made a series of pushes which moved them through the field at a dramatic pace , coming from a length behind Scots College ( NSW ) and half a length behind Brighton Grammar School to a length ahead of both crews . The 10A crew finished third , winning the bronze medal , behind NSW schools St Joseph ’ s College and St Augustine ’ s College , which finished in first and second place respectively .
The Boat Club has performed strongly this season , despite still being in a rebuilding phase following the shutdowns and instability of the past few years . The Boat Club is thankful for the support of the academic staff who offer pastoral care and academic assistance to student rowers . In addition , the club acknowledges the vital input of all parents who have worked to help their sons to participate in the sport . The club could not function without the work of the staff involved , including the many coaches , and the boatmen . The support of the Cardinal Club led by Ross Burney is also greatly appreciated .
