VCE HIGH ACHIEVER AWARD TO DHANIKA
TOP SCORER FOR SINHALA LANGUAGE
My name is Dhanika Nanayakkara , and I entered Scotch in Year 10 in 2021 as a boarder in McMeckan House . I am currently in Year 12 in Bond House and I am the Sailing Captain for Scotch College . I completed two VCE subjects last year , while I competed in international sailing regattas .
As I wanted to maintain my fluency and roots in my mother tongue , I decided to join the Victorian School of Languages to pursue the Sinhala language and ultimately do Sinhala as a VCE subject .
It has been a tough balancing act with Saturday sports , school work and extracurricular activities ! Studying a second language is a combination of many different parts . You have to be able to articulate yourself as a bilinguist . I made an ongoing effort to listen and read regularly

in my second language , and to research the country and culture . I should also mention the continued encouragement and support from my family and teachers .
My personal achievement of a raw score of 49 at VCE made me eligible to be nominated as the Top Scorer for Sinhala Language 2022 . I received the
VCE High Achiever Award on Saturday 4 February 2023 at the 75th anniversary of independence of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka .
I believe in my experience that with hard work and focus you are able to reach the pinnacle .
