INTERNATIONAL WOMEN ’ S DAY IN THE JUNIOR
SCHOOL
HIGHLIGHTING THE CONTRIBUTION OF WOMEN TO THE BOYS ’ LIVES
The Junior School acknowledged International Women ' s Day ( Wednesday 8 March ) with a community-based approach , highlighting the contributions of women to the lives of the boys . There was a special Assembly led by Year 6 boys , Hugh Webster and Viren Datta . The boys emphasised the under-representation of women in science , technology , engineering and mathematics ( STEM ) and the importance of pursing one ' s passions regardless of gender .
Scotch Chaplain Rev . Doug Campbell gave a message from 2 Kings 5:1 – 27 about respecting and valuing women ' s contributions . Staff were encouraged to wear purple and made donations to the Wangatunga Strong Women ' s Group on Bathurst Island .
Over morning tea , the Principal , Dr Marsh , visited the Junior School Common Room to deliver a message about the importance of gender equality and fostering respectful relationships . Boys in each class researched famous and community-based women from the past and present , showcasing their character traits in a display on our new Atrium Screen and in the Junior School Assembly Hall . The school community was proud of the progress made towards creating a more equal and just society .
Two Year 5 boys ’ responses to International Women ’ s Day appear below :
‘ I think that International Women ’ s Day is important , because for a long time men got all the credit for everything , and women play a very big part in our lives . For International Women ’ s Day , I researched about Queen Elizabeth I , because she played an important part in the world and commonwealth . She has become one of the many respected important women in history that we need to continue to recognise . That ’ s why I believe that celebrating International Women ’ s Day is so important .’ OSCAR BLENNERHASSETT
‘ On International Woman ' s Day we had a big Assembly where representatives from each year level spoke about a person that they researched as a project . I was very fortunate because I got to share my speech on Evonne Goolagong Cawley . I chose Evonne because she started from scratch and made it all the way to the top , proving whatever your story you can always become great at doing what you love doing most . Other speeches were incredible , really capturing what women did to make themselves different from others , from Amelia Earhart to Ash Barty .’ RUPERT HERRON www . scotch . vic . edu . au Great Scot 21
