WRIGHT , Frederick Kenneth ( formerly RIGHT , Fred Kurt ) (’ 41 )
Fred Kurt Right was born on 8 October 1925 at Vienna , Austria . After leaving Melbourne High School he attended Scotch on a Senior Scholarship in 1941 . Beyond knowing that he went to Melbourne University , Scotch lost all trace of him , and suspected that only his death would reveal a likely change of name .
Death revealed that Fred ’ s original name was Fritz Kurt Rechtschaffen , and that he later became Frederick Kenneth Wright , with Ken his preferred name . The son of Harry and Steffi Rechtscheffen , he was a member of a secular middle-class Viennese Jewish family . As a schoolboy , Ken was forced to wear a yellow star identifying him as Jewish . His mother wisely left Vienna with Ken , briefly moving to Nice , France , then travelling to even greater safety – to Adelaide , in June 1939 .
After matriculating from Scotch , Ken studied engineering at Melbourne University , specialising in metallurgy . Initially classified as an ‘ enemy alien ’ during World War II , he was forced to report to the Armadale police every week .
Ken ’ s study of engineering management inspired him to enrol in a Bachelor of Commerce course , for which he studied by night while studying engineering by day . He graduated in 1946 and in 1949 he moved to Port Pirie to work in the research department of Broken Hill Associated Smelters . By then he had become Frederick Kenneth Wright . Ken studied – part-time – for a cost accounting qualification , and after returning to Melbourne in 1951 spent two years as works accountant for H V McKay Massey-Harris .
While working for management consultant Ibcon , Ken used breaks between consulting assignments to investigate unanswered questions in accounting and finance that interested
