HOOK , Donald James (’ 52 ) Don ’ s son , James , wrote :
Don was born on 16 July 1935 at Campsie , New South Wales . Orphaned on 31 December 1945 , he attended Scotch from 1947 to 1951 . Don boarded in McMeckan ( 1947-48 ) and Arthur Robinson Houses ( 1949-51 ). His uncle by marriage , Dr Kenneth Arthur McLean MC ( and Bar ) ( born 11.10.1892 , SC 1905-09 , died 8 August 1960 ), was also his guardian .
The scrum-half in Scotch ’ s 1951 1st XV , Don was one of two Scotchies selected for the 1951 Victorian Schoolboys ’ Rugby team . They received special coaching from Headmaster Colin Macdonald Gilray , a former All Black and Scotland international . Don was a Cadet and a proud member of the 1951 Quarter Guard .
Attaining his Leaving Certificate , Don moved to Queensland as a copy holder and later a cadet at the Cairns Post . In 1954 he moved to Lismore in northern New South Wales as a reporter on The Northern Star and was called up for National Service in the RAAF .
Returning from a 1959 European working holiday , on the Fairsky , Don met his wife-to-be , Ethel Agnes ‘ Jane ’ Bowhill , of London . They married at All Saints Anglican Church , Woollahra on 14 December 1962 and the following week moved to Port Moresby for what became a five-year ABC posting . Don was transferred to Singapore in 1967 , New Delhi in 1970 and Port Moresby in 1973 , before returning to Melbourne in 1978 .
Don covered the Vietnam War ( arriving in Saigon on the second day of the Tet Offensive ), the Indo-Pakistani War and the birth of Bangladesh in 1971 , and the selfgovernment and independence of Papua New Guinea in 1973 and 1975 respectively . Joining the Australian Information Service in 1980 , Don served in Singapore and Bangkok then Canberra from 1988 . Early retirement preceded consultancy work and travel . A final career flourish
as a media officer at major sporting events included the Sydney , Athens and Beijing Olympics , the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games and the 2006 Asia Games in Doha .
Don spent nearly 30 years as a Legatee with Canberra Legacy , looking after Legacy widows and repaying Legacy ’ s childhood help to him .
Don died at Mansfield , Victoria , on 9 December 2022 .
HUNT , Geoffrey Robert (’ 47 ) Geoff ’ s son , Ian (’ 76 ), wrote : Geoff was born at Elsternwick on 10 August 1931 , the son of Eric Robert and Marjorie Fredrica ( nee Phillips ) Hunt . He attended Lloyd Street Central School , Malvern , then won a scholarship to Scotch , which he attended from 1944 to 1948 .
As was not uncommon in those days , Geoff did his Matriculation over two years , so while his peer group is 1947 , his final year was 1948 , in which year he was Form Captain of IX Maths . He played tennis and football for Monash House . Geoff was a member of the 1948 3rd XVIII . He was a cadet , and reached the rank of Cadet Lieutenant . Geoff ’ s son , Ian , attended Scotch from 1971 to 1976 .
In 1953 Geoff graduated from Melbourne University with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering . His career in engineering and project management was at the Country Roads Board . Geoff retired from the Road Construction Authority ( as the CRB had become ) in 1987 , then worked on a part-time basis over many years as an arbitrator and consultant project manager .
Geoff ’ s time in the Scotch Cadet Unit foreshadowed 30 years in the Citizen Military Forces ( Army Reserve ), from which he retired in 1983 as Colonel Hunt , Commanding Officer , 6 Engineer Group .
On 9 October 1957 Geoff married his childhood sweetheart , Margaret Betty ( Betty ) McCulloch at Scotch . She died
on 5 August 2019 . Their daughters were Megan ( died 2 September 1964 ) and Kate . Geoff was the proud grandfather of three .
Geoff and Betty very much enjoyed attending OSCA functions in their later years , especially as they had the opportunity to catch up with their old cronies .
Geoff died on 8 November 2022 at the Epworth Hospital , Richmond .
McLEISH ( formerly CRAPP ), James Edwin (’ 54 ) James ’ son , Stephen (’ 80 ), wrote :
James was born at Jessie McPherson Hospital , Melbourne on 13 November 1937 , the son of Dr Ian Edwin Crapp ( born 4.10.1911 , SC 1918-27 , died 13 April 2006 ). He attended Scotch from 1943 to 1955 . James was a Cub , and involved in numerous science-related clubs , James was also an active photographer . He was called on to perform mechanical repairs for Scotch , once having its precious cathode ray oscilloscope in pieces on his bedroom floor . James did well academically , especially in Maths , Chemistry and Physics . He had little interest in sport , but enjoyed a short time as a cox . He also loved Latin .
James was followed at Scotch by his brothers Andrew ( SC 1946-57 ), David ( SC 1949-60 ) and John ( SC 1950-61 ). Among others at Scotch were James ’ sons Stephen ( SC 1969-80 ) and David ( SC 1972- 83 ) and grandsons Oliver ( SC 2012-17 ) and Hugh ( SC 2007-19 ).
Commencing an engineering degree at Melbourne University , James joined the University Squadron to do National Service . He left university to join IBM in one of the first groups trained on mainframe computer technology . He revelled in programming and had an instinctive understanding of computers .
On 4 March 1961 James married Margaret Helen Pizzey at Scotch . Her father was Alexander Eliel Pizzey ( born 21.5.1912 , SC 1922-26 , died 17.9.2003 )
