audience joining the orchestra for the reprise of the first verse . A great way to open this celebratory concert .
Performances followed ; Leon Fei ( Year 12 ) gave a brilliant performance of the Korngold Violin Concerto , ably accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra , which then performed Glinka ’ s dazzling showpiece of an overture , Russlan and Ludmilla .
The School sang 40 Years On and Loch Lomond , and three numbers by Gilbert and Sullivan , concluding with Josh Munday ( Year 12 ) reminding us that A Policeman ’ s Lot is Not a Happy One ! The Academy Strings , under the skilled direction of Ben Castle , Head of Strings , performed The Court of Berevew by Anton Koch , and Symphonic Wind , under the baton of David Musk , concluded the first half with selections from Princess Mononoke by Joe Hisaishi .
Sam Murray ( Year 12 ), Captain of Bands , opened the second half as clarinet soloist , giving a nostalgic and tranquil performance of Glenn Miller ’ s Moonlight Serenade with the Show Band under the direction of Megan Philip . Then followed the quirkily named Step on a Crack , featuring saxophonist Xavier Tang and trombonist Joshua Munday . Xavier Tang ( Year 12 ) had a big night – the College Choir ’ s beautiful performance of Ola Gjeilo ’ s Evening Prayer featured a saxophone solo from Xavier .
Then followed an impressive performance of Christopher Tin ’ s Kia Hora Te Marino with an instrumental accompaniment , all directed by Andrew Hunter . The Chamber Choir – always a highlight – performed beautifully , concluding their bracket with the Jamaican Folk Song , Hol ’ You Han ’.
Military Band took the stage with Summon the Heroes , and the Drumline reminded us that Life is a Dance – an outstanding piece written by percussion staff member Harry Potocnik , and directed by Campbell Philips . Then on came our Pipes and Drums , performing MacCrimmon ’ s Lament for the Children , featuring soloist Zach Hutchings ( Year 12 ).
It was time for the audience to join in again , with the College Song and Boating Song , before Xavier Tang sang Bui Doi from Miss Saigon in spectacular style , with the massed singers joining in at the end . The concert concluded with the united boys singing a selection from Les Miserables , accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra . It was the perfect finish to an exceptional night , as we all rejoiced that ' Foundation Day again is here ' – but , thankfully , without the song of the same name !
