Appropriately , the evening was divided into four ‘ quarters ’, preceded by a ‘ pre-game warm-up ’, in which guests gathered in the Dining Room bar . They enjoyed pre-dinner drinks and canapes , overlooking the lush green sward of the MCG in its betweenseasons phase , just 12 days before the first game of the 2022 AFL season .
Highlights of the evening included :
• Announcement of men ’ s and women ’ s club Captains for 2022 – Andrew Jelbart (’ 11 ) and Bec Comand – and their official welcome to guests .
• Presentation of OSFC Life Membership certificates to Bruce Armstrong , Henry Dick (’ 09 ), David McCleery (’ 86 ) and Scott Montgomery (’ 85 ). Scott ’ s award was re-presented from 2020 after a delay caused by COVID . Scott is recovering from serious illness and was unable to attend the dinner , so the award was accepted on his behalf by his father , John (’ 59 ) and son , Eddie (’ 18 ).
• An address by OSFC President , Tim Shearer (’ 85 ), in which he thanked all club sponsors , mentioning in particular the sponsorship of McQueen Group and the federal government ( through JobKeeper ) in the difficult days of 2020 , without which Tim said the club would not have been able to operate ; and presentation of certificates of appreciation to Angus McQueen (’ 91 , Founder and Partner of the McQueen Group ) and the Federal Treasurer and member for Kooyong , Hon Josh Frydenberg MP .
• A response by the Hon Josh Frydenberg , in which he praised the club for its proud history , its long tenure in the VAFA ’ s Premier section , and its outreach as a supporter and encourager of young people .
• The inauguration of the John Anderson Medal , to be awarded for outstanding service to the club by a player , announced by Tim Shearer and endorsed by former Club Coach , Laurie Aghan .
• Announcement of the OSFC Team of the Club ’ s First Century – see pages 87 and 88 .
• A live auction , energetically conducted by Lachie Fraser- Smith (’ 85 ) of Jellis Craig , which raised $ 20,000 for the club . There was strong support for all items – a Ben Shearer watercolour , an MCG private suite ‘ experience ’ donated by Donald McDonald and McDonald Management , a financial planning session donated by McQueen Group , a Carlton Football Club signed jumper , and a night out with the Melbourne Football Club 2021 premiership cup . After enjoying a delicious selection of canapes during the ‘ pre-game warm-up ’, once in the Dining Room guests tucked into an entrée of free range chicken and duck , followed by succulent West Gippsland free range beef tenderloin , accompanied by a well-chosen range of wines from the Rothbury Estate , Lindeman and Seppelt .
The raffle drawn , the club song sung , and formalities over , the dinner drew to a close at around 11pm , but for many guests the night was yet young . They kicked on at the ‘ after match ’ function , held at the Duke of Wellington Hotel in Flinders Street .
The great success of the long-awaited and much-anticipated dinner was due to the untiring work over a long period of event coordinator , Sandra Dick , supported by club President , Tim Shearer . MCs Nat Edwards of the AFL and David Temple (’ 63 ) were outstanding and kept the dinner formalities running smoothly ).
