TEACHERS WORK CLOSELY WITH EACH BOY , DISCUSSING INDIVIDUAL IDEAS AND INSPIRATION

STUDENT-CENTRED LEARNING IN THE VISUAL ARTS

TEACHERS ARE ABLE TO WORK CLOSELY WITH EACH BOY
Scotch ’ s Visual Arts Department celebrates inquiry and supports students in developing creative and critical thinking skills , equipping them to interpret the rich diversity of the world in which we live . As students in their teenage years grow and evolve , their expanding view of the world around them promotes new interests and at times , provides challenges .
We foster a student-centred approach in the studios , particularly in practical classes , which enables each boy to develop individually . In Art , students work on projects that encourage discovery and selfexpression of personal and political subject matter . Boys develop skills and techniques by working in a range of mediums including ceramics , printmaking , painting and digital technologies . Visual Communication offers a focus on applying design thinking processes to solve challenges .
With an emphasis on a conversational style of learning , teachers are able to work closely with each boy , discussing individual ideas and inspiration . We follow a strengthsbased approach , always encouraging growth , to help students build confidence in their ideas and their ability to communicate
them visually . This requires teachers to develop strong relationships with students , based on trust and mutual respect .
The success and integrity of the artworks produced within the studios is influenced by these relationships . In discussions with their students , teachers aim to promote curiosity and depth of thought . This provides boys with a deeper understanding of their own artistic intentions and how to express their thoughts and feelings through art .
