THESE ARE EXTRACTS OF SCHOOL CAPTAIN TOMMY LIVADARAS ’ AND VICE CAPTAIN LEON FEI ’ S ADDRESSES TO THE SCHOOL EARLY IN TERM 1 .
I will take you back to Saturday 8 May , 2021 . Melbourne Grammar ’ s home pitch . The weather is mild , but stakes are high . Sweat is pouring down the foreheads of Scotch boys as they stand strong to defend their try line . The sound of cheering Scotch families and friends reverberates through the campus of our archrivals . The groans of the scrum grow louder each second as we push Grammar back , metre by metre , until the final whistle blows and we are rewarded with the sweet taste of victory , as the 1st Rugby team claims back the perpetual Colin Bell Rugby Cup , after seven years .
It was this moment as I stood chanting with my fellow Scotch brothers in arms that I truly realised Scotch College is so much more than an institution built for education , but rather a home that will support , nurture and develop boys , in a way that extends beyond the school gates .
It ’ s very easy to go through school doing the bare minimum and just going through the motions . What ’ s harder is being able to step outside of what feels comfortable in order to discover your true potential . By doing this you will find your true passion and calling . Scotch allows each student the opportunity to be the best version of himself , while developing world-ready attributes such as integrity , respect and empathy , to name a few . This is the reason I am so proud to be a Scotchie , and why I believe that Scotch enables students to be better human beings and better members of society . I remember reading this quote : ‘ Touch the edges of your comfort zone on a regular basis ; it will help you realise what you are capable of '.
The range of opportunities offered to us is immense . I would like to stress this message to all you boys , whether you ’ re at the beginning of your journey or nearing the end of your time at Scotch : take on as many opportunities as you can of the challenges and extracurricular activities that the School offers you . There are so many facets of this School , that no matter who you are and what your interests are , you will find a family here at Scotch . For me , it happened to be rugby , but it will be different for each and every one of you .
So , go out and try different things so that you may find your place and experience in being an integral part of the Scotch community . Push outside of your comfort zone and see what you are capable of .
Boys , let ’ s not settle for ordinary . Scotch offers us the opportunity to be extraordinary . Let ’ s use the incredible facilities , embrace the diversity of those around us , and get involved !
