Obtaining First Class Honours in Latin and Economics in 1948 , Denzil matriculated then studied Law at the University of Melbourne , with a resident scholarship to Ormond College . He was a member of Ormond ’ s athletics team and choir .
Graduating with a Bachelor of Laws in 1953 , Denzil completed articles of clerkship with a city law firm before establishing his own firm in Ringwood and practising there for more than 40 years . In the 1960s , he returned to study part time , and was awarded a Master of Laws from Melbourne University in 1968 for a thesis arguing for reform of the law of theft in Victoria . Denzil was among the first suburban and longestserving Victorian Notary Publics , having been appointed in 1972 .
A longstanding member of the Rotary Club of Ringwood , Denzil was made a Paul Harris Fellow in 1983 . He also served on the Ringwood Chamber of Commerce , and made other significant contributions to the local community through pro bono legal work and volunteering .
In retirement , Denzil revived his passion for musical performance as a member of the Melbourne Welsh Male Choir , singing alongside artists such as Judith Durham , Aled Jones and Bryn Terfel . In more modest company , he entertained fellow patrons at the MCG with tuneful renditions of the Collingwood club song , before – and on a good day – after a game .
Denzil died at the Wantirna Views Care Community , Wantirna , on 31 May 2021 . He will be sadly missed by his family and friends . His beloved wife , Judith Elizabeth ( nee Welch ), whom he married at St Columb ’ s Anglican Church , Hawthorn on 3 September 1955 , joined Denzil on 12 September 2021 .
KERR , Rev . Graeme Kelvin Charles (’ 59 )
Graeme ’ s wife and children wrote :
Graeme was born on 29 May 1942 at St George ’ s
Hospital , Kew , the son of Kelvin Charles Marshall Kerr ( born 31.10.1911 , SC 1927-28 , died 28.7.1970 ) and Mavis Ethel Rose Morgan . He attended Scotch from 1956 to 1959 on a Minor Senior Entrance Scholarship in Lawson-MacFarland House . Also at Scotch were brothers Robert ( SC 1959-62 ) and Charles David Kerr ( born 20.4.1950 , SC 1964-67 , died 19.8.2019 ).
On 14 August 1965 Graeme married June Lynette Nicolson at the Glen Iris Presbyterian Church . Their daughter , Kymberley , attended PLC , and sons Marcus and Nicolas attended Haileybury College . Pursuing his calling to the clergy , Graeme boarded at Ormond College and graduated from Melbourne University with a Bachelor of Arts , followed by a postgraduate Bachelor of Divinity at Otago University in New Zealand . Ordained to the Presbyterian Church in 1971 , Graeme fulfilled callings to two suburban Melbourne parishes before becoming Haileybury College ’ s Senior Chaplain ( 1976-2000 ).
Graeme provided spiritual guidance to thousands of Haileybury boys , also contributing to all facets of school life : faith , study , sport , drama and music . He referenced Scotch ’ s Littlejohn Chapel in stature and provision of sanctuary as he championed the building of Haileybury ’ s David Bradshaw Chapel , named for former Haileybury Principal ( 1954-73 ) David Frederick Maxwell Bradshaw ( born 24.10.1906 , SC 1920-24 , staff 1930-53 , died 18.9.1995 ).
Beyond serving Haileybury ’ s boys , Graeme was a trusted and caring ear for Haileybury ’ s community , and the APS . His contribution influenced many : challenging their thinking , guiding them through troubles or comforting them in their despair .
Graeme balanced dedication to Haileybury with periods as the Minister for St Cuthbert ’ s in Lorne , significant contributions to the Uniting Church in Australia ’ s Synod , and as an involved father .
Following Haileybury , Graeme continued to provide spiritual guidance and the comfort of faith to the parish at St Andrew ’ s Box Hill , before retirement , including as the 2012 Crawford-Miller visiting fellow at St Cross College , Oxford . He devoted time to his love of travel and cruising with wife
June , and as a generous ‘ Pa ’ to his three grandchildren .
Graeme died on 9 February 2022 at the Epworth Hospital , Richmond , survived by his wife , children , and their families .
KERR OAM , Robert Donald (’ 46 )
Rob ’ s son , Michael (’ 77 ), wrote :
Rob was born at Essendon on 18 January 1930 . He attended Aberfeldie State School , Essendon High School ( 1941-43 ) and attended Scotch on a scholarship from 1944 to 1946 . Relatives at Scotch included sons Stephen ( SC 1970-75 ), Michael ( SC 1972-77 ), and Ian ( SC 1975-80 ), Kerr grandsons Lachlan ( SC 2001-06 ), Simon ( SC 2004-09 ), Andrew ( SC 2005-2010 ) and Hamish ( SC 2008-13 ), and Alastair Crameri ( SC 2006-11 ). His great-uncle was Frank Shew ( born 14 June 1851 , SC 1860-66 , staff 1870-1922 , died 15 June 1934 ).
In 1946 Rob played in the 2nd XI and 2nd XVIII , represented Scotch in long jump and was IX Maths Vice Captain . He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University ( 1951 ).
Rob ’ s life revolved around the North Essendon Methodist Church and sport . Aged 21 , he captained the football team in the strong EDFL competition , and took nine wickets in the cricket team ’ s 1950 / 51 senior premiership-winning game .
In 1955 Rob travelled to Europe , meeting Joan Margaret Argue on the ship , and proposed three days later . They married at Scotch on 21 January 1956 . Besides their Scotchies , they had daughters Jenny and Melinda , and seven grandchildren . Joan died on 19 December 2019 .
Rob was Company Secretary of Liquid Air Australia ( 1956-68 ) before joining the international Hay Consulting Group . In 1974 he became Managing Director and later Chairman Asia Pacific Region , retiring in 1987 . Rob also sat on the board of the Hay Group in Philadelphia .
