returning it , with dismissive comments , unread as “ much too short ”. I took it back , copied it out in large handwriting and submitted it unchanged in any other way . It was well received this time !’

1970s

Dr JAMES TAYLOR (’ 76 ), who received an OAM in the Australia Day 2022 honours ( see the OSCA section of this edition ) told Great Scot that his 12 Scotch years provided a wealth of opportunities to participate beyond the classroom . He cited Scotch teachers and role models who positively influenced him . ‘ Rex Fettell in the Junior School taught me a love of sailing and adventure , which are now a major part of my retirement . Neil Cracknell ( Maths in Forms 3 and 6 ) taught me a love of maths , numbers and patterns , which I used a lot as a doctor and Department Director ! David Boykett ( Sea Scouts ) taught me that leadership , tenacity and practical skills will win the day , and that most hazards can be overcome with a length of rope and a good knot .
‘ The Scouting movement taught me that a leader keeps an eye out for the stragglers and team morale , and encouraged a commitment to social service and community . Under Ian Harrison ( Drama ) I won a Drama prize – amazing since I was only ever backstage – but I really enjoyed the preparation , scheduling and behind the scenes organisation that was part of the whole shebang .’
When MARK WOOTTON (’ 78 ) received an Officer of the Order of Australia award ( AO ) in the Australia Day 2022 honours , it was a family affair , with Mark ’ s wife , Eve Kantor , also receiving an AO award on Australia Day . Each was honoured for distinguished service to the community through philanthropic support for a range of organisations , and to the environment . ( See the OSCA section of this edition .)
Mark told Great Scot that he and Eve met through participating in the Scotch / Ruyton play in 1976 . ‘ Eve was 13 and I was 15 ,’ he said . ‘ It has been a long and happy relationship ever since , that would not have taken place if we didn ’ t go to both our schools . Among other outputs we have produced four wonderful children who live very purposeful lives that make us very proud . I can ’ t say the same for our theatrical careers . Luckily for others that play was our one and only theatrical effort !’

1980s

Graduating in Veterinary Science at Melbourne University in 1993 , Dr CHRISTOPHER PRESTON (’ 88 ) developed an interest in orthopaedic surgery for dogs . He undertook a residency training program at the University of California from 1997-2000 , enabling him to become a specialist in small animal surgery ( mostly dogs ) and to start his own private vet hospital back in Melbourne .
After 10 challenging years , Chris took the brave step of opening a large practice near Chadstone shopping centre on Dandenong Road , opposite the Rosstown Hotel . Now well established , this clinic now has a 24 / 7 emergency practice and modern facilities .
Chris has many fond memories of his Scotch school days , and keeps in contact with a handful of Scotchies . He was married in the Scotch Chapel in 2007 , and he has two children , Olive ( 12 ) and Wil ( 10 ). Wil begins at Scotch in Year 7 next year . The family lives in East Malvern , and they love to spend weekends at their Somers beach house . Chris plays lawn tennis at Kooyong in his spare time .
After leaving Scotch , MICHAEL GREGORY (’ 89 ) studied Law and Economics at Monash University and completed an honours year in Econometrics . He commenced working life in corporate law with Corrs Chambers Westgarth from 1996 through to 2004 . Two of these years were spent in London with the law firm , Linklaters .
In late 2004 , Michael made a career change into investment banking , joining Merrill Lynch and working in its Melbourne , Sydney and London offices . Michael is currently a Managing Director at 333 Capital in Melbourne , focusing on the sale of private businesses .
Michael and his wife , Georgie , have two boys at Scotch : William ( in Year 8 ) and James ( Year 6 ). As well as enjoying work and family life , Michael gets out on the golf course as often as possible . Michael sits on the board of National Golf Holdings Limited and is on the committee of the National Golf Club .
