The Royal Society is the United Kingdom ' s national academy of sciences . Founded on 28 November 1660 , it is a fellowship of many of the world ' s most eminent scientists , and is the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence .
The Royal Society promotes science and its benefits , recognises excellence in science , supports outstanding science , provides scientific advice for policy , and fosters international and global cooperation , education and public engagement .
The Royal Society ' s core members are the Fellows : scientists and engineers from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth , their selection based on having made ‘ a substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge , including mathematics , engineering science and medical science ’.
Up to 52 Fellows are elected each year . Fellows are elected for life and are entitled to use the postnominal FRS ( Fellow of the Royal Society ) or ForMemRS ( Foreign Member of the Royal Society ). There are 1600 Fellows and 140 Foreign Members .
Nullius in verba , the Royal Society ’ s motto , means ' take nobody ' s word for it ', an expression of the determination of Fellows to withstand the domination of authority , and to verify all statements by an appeal to facts determined by experiment .
The Royal Society ’ s Charter Book is arguably the Society ’ s most important single historical document . The book was created in 1663 after King Charles II granted a second Royal Charter to the organisation , establishing the structure of the Royal Society . Since the first signature was entered on its pages on 9 January 1665 , the fine vellum folio has recorded the signatures of new Fellows and Foreign Members as they were elected year by year , as well as those of Royal Patrons .
Seven Old Scotch Collegians have signed the Charter Book as Fellows of the Royal Society :
Sir Neil Hamilton Fairley KBE CBE FRS ( SC 1905-08 ) Sir Thomas MacFarland Cherry FRS FAA ( SC 1908-14 ) Professor Richard Henry Dalitz FRS ( SC1938-41 ) Dr Alan Kenneth Head AO FRS FAA ( SC 1941-42 ) Dr John Robert Philip AO FRS FAA ( SC 1939-42 ) Professor Andrew Bruce Holmes AC FRS FAA FTSE ( SC 1954-61 ) Professor John Charles Howorth Spence ForMemRS FAA ( SC 1954-64 )
