MELVILLE SB StJ , Dr Hugh James (’ 41 ) Hugh ’ s son , Rob (’ 71 ), wrote :
Hugh James Melville was born at North Carlton on 28 June 1924 , the son of Dr Alexander Hugh ( born 5.7.1889 , SC 1903-07 , died 14.8.1957 ) and Helen Templeton ( nee Cormack ) Melville . Hugh attended Scotch from 1936 to 1942 .
His Scotch relatives included his brother , John Frederick Melville ( born 24.1.1918 , SC 1930-33 , died 11.8.2009 ), sons Rob ( SC 1966-71 ) and Peter ( SC 1971-76 ), nephews John Roy Melville ( born 31.12.1946 , SC 1960-65 , died 18.2.1988 ) and Allan ( SC 1967-74 ); and grandsons Andrew ( SC 2000- 05 ), Timothy ( SC 2002-07 ) and Cameron Melville ( SC 2008-13 ); and Hugh Wilson ( SC 1999-2004 ).
Playing in the 1941 and 1942 premiership 1st XIs ( 1942 Vice Captain ), Hugh also played in the 1st XVIII ( 1940-42 ), and was Vice Captain of the 1942 premiership team . He was a Scotch Collegian editorial team member , and a senior Cadet Lieutenant . Hugh was Morrison House Captain ( 1941-42 ), a 1941 Probationer and Prefect , and 1942 School Vice Captain .
In 1942 Hugh joined the army , then , in 1944 , the AIF , as a gunner with the 2nd 12th Australian Field Regiment , 9th Division , serving in Borneo and New Guinea .
Hugh graduated in medicine at Melbourne University in 1951 , and , on 20 November 1951 , married Judith Bartlett at Scotch .
After two years ’ residency at the Alfred Hospital , Hugh commenced general practice at Swan Hill in 1954 . Hugh and Judith raised four children , worked hard , and enjoyed country life until returning to Melbourne in 1967 . Hugh practised in Malvern until retiring in 1987 .
Hugh was involved in many Old Scotch activities , including being President of the East Melbourne Glen Chapter . He was passionate about the Old Scotch Football Club , first as a player , and then following his
sons , son-in-law , and four grandsons . He was honorary medical officer for many years .
President of the 2nd 12th Field Regiment Association for many years , Hugh edited its Take Post magazine . He was a staunch Anzac Day marcher . A dedicated medical Legacy Advocate , both in Swan Hill and in retirement , Hugh assisted many war widows .
Hugh loved having time at his Waratah Bay holiday house with family and friends . He enjoyed travelling , golf at Commonwealth Golf Club , tennis , woodwork , and watercolour painting . A devoted and committed family man , Hugh quietly achieved so much in his life .
He died at Faversham House , Canterbury , on 23 October 2021 . He is survived by Judith , his sons , and daughters Catherine and Diana .
MUIR , Dr Robert Peter (’ 75 ) Bob ’ s wife , Robin , wrote : Robert Peter Muir was born at East Melbourne on 17 June 1958 . Known as Bob , he attended Mooroopna State School and Shepparton High School before attending Scotch from 1972 to 1975 as a boarder in McMeckan House ( of which he was a 1975 Prefect ), and as a member of Littlejohn House . Bob played in the 1975 3rd XI and 1st XV . He tutored in mathematics , and formed lifetime friendships .
Studying Dentistry at Melbourne University as a Janet Clarke Hall resident , Bob continued playing rugby . He graduated in 1982 , excelling in surgery and endodontics . Bob practised in Melbourne and rural Victoria until moving in 1988 to practise at Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast . He returned to Scotch to marry Robin Ann McDade on 6 May 1989 .
Building a home in Buderim , life for the next 20 years centred around family and work . Bob and Robin enjoyed travelling to remote parts of Australia and beyond , including a week in Amalfi with Scotch
friends . Bob ’ s busy practice serviced locals and tourists for more than three decades . Colleagues considered Bob a fine practitioner and mentor . He attended local Australian Dental Association meetings , and volunteered after-hours care .
Bob pursued every interest – even qualifying as a Microsoft engineer to fully understand its application . A boat owner from his teens , fishing was Bob ’ s recreation : add camping and kayaking into the mix , and he was in his element .
Active in the Sunshine Coast Game Fishing Club , Bob served for several years as Secretary / Treasurer and was club champion in individual and crewed tournaments . He was a member of the Mooloolaba Coast Guard . Bob enjoyed annual gatherings with Scotch friends in northern Australia for chartered boating and fishing . Evenings were spent over a meal of the day ’ s catch , a glass of wine , and talking into the night .
Commencing treatment for an advanced and rare cancer in March 2020 , Bob ’ s great friends travelled from Victoria – some undertaking quarantine – to support him . Bob died at Dove Palliative Care in Caloundra , Queensland , on 12 July 2021 , with Robin and daughters Ellen and Imogen by his side . His ashes were scattered at sea .
NOONAN OAM , Trevor Humphrey (’ 56 ) Trevor ’ s granddaughter , Lily Noonan , wrote :
Trevor was born at the Blackburn Hospital , Blackburn , on 18 December 1938 , the son of Edwin William Noonan ( born 1.10.1903 , SC 1916-18 , died 28.11.1952 ) and Eleanor Cecilia Louisa ( nee Raisbeck ) Noonan .
Trevor attended Scotch College from 1951 to 1955 . Relations at Scotch included his cousins Michael Redfern Noonan ( born 29.11.1934 , SC 1947-50 , died 17.3.2002 ), David John Noonan ( born 25.7.1935 , SC 1947-52 , died 6.9.1991 ) and James Noonan ( SC 1954-59 ), uncles Hubert Jack
