boys ’ endeavours to bring their ideas to life through the manufacturing process .
Scott was a caring and dedicated Tutor within Fleming House , ensuring the boys in his care remained appropriately supported in their learning during times of physical separation . Time was also spent coaching touch rugby and rugby . Scott was involved in the Year 9 Outdoor Expedition Program , assisting with the boys ’ development of bushcraft and navigation skills .
SIMON GOODING
Appointed to a Science position at the start of 2019 , Simon Gooding taught senior Chemistry and Science to all levels . Possessing a deep and thorough knowledge of his subject , and the ability to relate the theoretical to the practical , Simon guided and challenged the boys in his care , no matter their ability level , with attention to detail , patience and a supportive hand . Simon was a coach of tennis , a tutor in Selby Smith , and a valuable member of the Cadet Corps .
RYAN JOHNSTONE
Ryan Johnstone came to Scotch on a one-term replacement position in 2004 , and was appointed to a fulltime position in the English Department from the start of 2006 .
Ryan has taught all levels of English and English Literature with passion , meticulous planning and deep subject knowledge . Boys have taken up the challenge , opened their hearts and minds and produced outcomes of the highest order . With Ryan ’ s appointments as Deputy Head of English in 2009 and Head of English in 2019 , the English Department has grown in both stature and reputation .
Ryan ’ s love and understanding of the English language have been to the fore in his involvement in Debating , where , for 12 years , he has overseen the Scotch program . Under his leadership , debating has grown in popularity , with over 150 boys now involved across age groups and levels of competition . Success has been gained , both individually and collectively .
Time has also been spent involved in the Year 10 Activities Program ( seven years ), coaching basketball ( two years ), and tutoring in the Centre for Learning ( two years ). For five years , Ryan was a caring and supportive House Tutor . Ryan ’ s contribution to Scotch has been significant and enduring .
IVAN KEY Beginning at Scotch in 2010 as Campus Coordinator and Cadet Officer with responsibility for the Cadet Q Store and school vehicles , Ivan Key ’ s role was soon expanded to include responsibilities as the Safety Officer .
In the Cadet Stores , Ivan created a more organised and efficient environment for storing and issuing kit to cadets . As Cadet Officer , he took over the Mountaineering Platoon .
For several years , Ivan was Senior Instructor for the Junior Leaders Course , preparing Year 9s to become corporals . He attended numerous cadet bivouacs and camps , providing logistics support and fieldcraft training . As Parade Director for the Tattoo and Retreat Ceremony , Ivan trained and prepared the Cadets over 10 consecutive annual Tattoos ( 2010 to 2019 ), and in 2013 , he was the driving force behind a Cadet group tour of the UK and Germany .
As Safety Officer , Ivan had responsibility for school trips and tours , maintaining compliance and appropriate safety procedures for outdoor activities and ensuring that best practice risk management was followed . Ivan ’ s role further expanded to incorporate transport and logistics , working closely with many departments to improve Scotch ’ s trip system and procedures .
Staff and boys have undoubtedly benefited from Ivan ’ s passion for outdoor education , and the safe environment he has helped to develop .

DAVID KINGSLEY
David Kingsley joined the Grounds team during July 2000 after working at the Prahran Cricket Club , where he was responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the turf cricket pitches . With this skill set , Dave began his journey at Scotch preparing the turf cricket pitches on the Meares Oval , and soon worked his way to the Main Oval , where he regularly produced cricket pitches which were often described by the boys from the 1st XI as ‘ the Scotch road ’ – hard , flat , and simply a batsman ’ s paradise !
However , it was Dave ’ s true passion for gardening that really ignited his spark . A position as gardener was soon created , and here Dave truly made his mark over his 21-year tenure . With a strong desire to learn and grow , Dave enthusiastically completed a Diploma in Horticulture at Swinburne University , and willingly used this knowledge in his work on the gardens you see today around the Senior School .
Combined with Dave ’ s artistic flair , incredible work ethic and many years of meticulous preparation , he will leave behind a wonderful legacy for many generations to enjoy as they stroll through Scotch ’ s picturesque grounds and gardens . He has departed from Scotch to take up an exciting opportunity to further his career in the country . Michael Smith
ROSIE LEAVER
After 10 exemplary years , Rosie has left a lasting impression on everyone at Scotch . Initially joining the Library team in 2011 , it was in her role as assistant to the Director of Sport and Careers Office where she made her greatest contribution . Rosie ’ s attention to detail on all tasks , but particularly in the accuracy of the weekly sports fixtures , is noteworthy .
She displayed an outstanding work ethic , an ability to multitask , a willingness and desire to learn , but most importantly always
