STAFF RESIGNATIONS *
PAULINE CARDWELL
Appointed to a position in the Science Department at the start of 2017 , Pauline Cardwell has , in the ensuing years , taught Units 1-4 VCE Biology , and all levels of Science from Years 7-10 . With strong subject knowledge , and the ability to forge strong relationships with the boys in her care , Pauline has been a collegial and supportive member of the Science Department , producing and sharing numerous resources that have enhanced the learning experience of the boys .
Pauline has been a caring , well organised and thoughtful tutor and form teacher , spending three years looking after the boys in Morrison , and two years assisting Year 7 boys settle into Senior School . Summers have seen Pauline courtside as coach and Teacher-in-Charge of Thirds tennis , and winters have seen Pauline coach hockey .
For each of her five years Pauline has been involved in the Year 10 Activities Program , assisting with yoga . In addition to attending two yoga camps , Pauline also attended a fly fishing camp , and organised and led the highly successful 2018 Science tour to Europe . In her role of Science Ambassador , a position she has held since 2020 , Pauline organised many Science extension activities , including the popular ‘ Science Friday ’ lunchtime activities , all of which have opened boys ’ minds to the world of Science and scientific research . Pauline also organised this year ’ s highly entertaining and thought-provoking Science Oration .
MARTA CASSIDY
Coming to Scotch as Head of Science at the start of 2016 , Dr Marta Cassidy oversaw the process of bringing the sciences together in the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science , ensuring staff were well placed throughout the building to bond and use the spaces provided for
preparation , interaction and innovation . Championing the importance and beauty of Science , both within and beyond the Scotch community , Marta was responsible for providing opportunities for boys to participate in extension activities , international conferences , and research in collaboration with leading scientists . Marta ensured the aspirations for the annual Science Oration have been met , bringing leading scientists into the lives and work of the boys .
Beyond the laboratory , Marta was an academic tutor in McMeckan House , and assisted with the Year 9 rowing and athletics programs . Marta was also involved in the annual i2 Camp .
ALICE COOK
Initially appointed to a temporary position at the start of 2007 , with tenure soon forthcoming , Alice Cook taught English across all year levels , Media , History , Geography and Christian Education . Those fortunate to have come under her spell have been motivated by Alice ’ s belief in creative approaches and student voice , as means to acquire agency and develop an appreciation of the potential for language to engage and influence amid our complexity and diversity .
Armed with such intent and formidable intellectual rigour , Alice has brought thoughtfulness and razor-sharp insight to the dissection of authorial purpose . Feedback has been provided with generosity and thoroughness , guiding generations of VCE students to fine results and greater appreciation of themselves and their relationship with others .
Alice ’ s care and commitment to those in her charge were very much in evidence in her role as Year 8 Form Teacher ( one year ), Year 10 and 11 House Tutor ( two years ), and most recently Head of Forbes House ( 10 years ) and Head of Monash House ( one year ).
Amid the broad Scotch landscape , Alice ’ s contribution has been varied and meaningful . For 15 years , Alice coached rugby , and time was also spent coaching tennis ( four years ) and assisting boys develop their first aid skills and knowledge as part of the Sports First Aid Program ( 15
years ). Alice also attended Year 8 Outdoor Learning Program camps , Year 9 Retreats and numerous Sports First Aid camps .
ELLIE DRAYTON Ellie Drayton was appointed to a Mathematics position at the start of Term 3 , 2018 , and taught all levels of Mathematics from Year 7 to VCE Mathematical Methods . With warm collegiality and pedagogical knowledge , Ellie produced , and readily shared , resources of the highest standard . In her role as Deputy Head of Mathematics , a position held since the start of 2019 , Ellie assisted with the running of the Mathematics Department , ensuring the best possible outcomes for the boys , and , through support , advice and comradeship , for new staff .
Ellie ’ s commitment to the boys in her care was very evident in her role as tutor in Littlejohn House , where she ensured each boy in her tutor group had a positive and enjoyable experience , secure in the knowledge that she would be there with helping hand and encouraging word . Beyond the classroom , Ellie was Teacher-in-Charge of Gymnastics , accompanied boys to the Ballarat Specialist School as part of the Year 11 Immersion Program , and assisted boys with their Mathematics as part of the Centre for Learning Tutoring Program .
SCOTT JAMES
Appointed to a Design Technology position at the start of Term 2 , 2020 , Scott James taught Design Technology and Product Design across Years 7 to 11 . Positive relationships with boys were readily formed with those in his charge , and his commitment to assisting them as they navigated the design process was clear . Scott encouraged boys to think creatively as they explored the opportunities of the world of design . At screen , desk and bench , Scott ’ s thoughtful , considered approach ensured clear direction and support for
