ONLINE DEBATING SUCCESS

SCOTCH TAKES THE POINTS IN A NATIONAL ONLINE COMPETITION
Scotch has participated in all divisions of the National Online Debating Competition , which draws teams from throughout numerous regional and urban-based schools . It has been conducted via videoconference every few weeks since July .
The National Online Debating Competition is unique from other competitions , offering the opportunity to compete against schools from a diverse range of backgrounds , unlike the comparatively homogeneous Melbourne competition .
Scotch won National Online Debating ’ s senior division , with a team consisting of
Max Fan ( Year 12 ), Joshua Qin ( Year 10 ), Euan Maclean and Robert Barber ( both Year 11 ). The team succeeded in what is often a high-class competition , beating the likes of Canberra Girls ’ Grammar , Saint Luke ’ s Bundaberg , and Armidale ’ s O ’ Connor Catholic College . Topics ranged from voter ID laws and a federal anti-corruption commission to the best way to remove dictators from office , providing a challenging , yet rewarding experience for all those involved .
Victory was , however , somewhat bittersweet , being the last debate in the illustrious career of Max Fan at Scotch . Captain of Debating this year , and Captain of both the Victorian and Australian teams , Max has been a formidable mentor , coach , and friend to all the members of this team and the broader debating community .
Ms Michele Linossier , Teacher-in-Charge of Scotch ’ s Extension Studies program , and organiser of this debating competition ( who is also leaving Scotch at the end of the year ), will also be a sad loss to the Scotch community , with 20 years of commitment to bettering the lives of boys , past and present . Max ’ s and Ms Linossier ’ s devotion to Scotch debating will be sorely missed by all
