Lachlan ’ s great-great-uncle , James William ( called Jim ) Park ( SC 1919-26 ) fought in World War II , and was killed in action in New Guinea in 1943 . He was survived by his wife , Marjorie , and a young daughter . Park had been an excellent footballer , playing 128 games for Carlton in the VFL from 1932-40 , mainly on the back line . He was a member of Carlton ’ s 1938 premiership team , and also represented Victoria in 1938 . Edward ’ s great-great-great-uncle was David Keith ( called Keith )

Edward takes up the story : ‘ David McIlwraith was a Scotch boy in 1912 and is my great-great-great-uncle . He was a keen sportsman . David was killed at the landing in Gallipoli on Anzac Day , 25 April 1915 , at the age of 22 . His name is recorded in the honour roll in the Memorial Hall .
‘ The family story was that he had made his way to cover off the beach and was well placed in a slight dugout , but came out to assist [ his fellow soldier ] Clarence O ’ Brien , who was hit and in open terrain . He got Clarence back into the hole and was just about to get himself back down when he was shot and killed .
‘ Clarence visited the McIlwraith family on special occasions , such as Christmas , after the war . He was really like a member of the family .’
