The following obituaries have been written by families or friends , except the obituary for Julie Keitha Halpin , which was
BURNSIDE , Malcolm Ian (’ 80 ) Malcolm ’ s wife , Margaret , wrote :
Malcolm Ian Burnside was born at Kew on 9 February 1963 , the son of Alan Thomas Magill Burnside ( born 12.3.1926 , SC 1937- 42 , died 22.10.1999 ). Malcolm attended Scotch from 1975 to 1980 . He was a member of Monash House , until boarding in Arthur Robinson House from 1979 to 1980 as a member of Littlejohn House . Malcolm was a 1980 Arthur Robinson and Littlejohn House Prefect . He was Captain of the 1980 1st Hockey team . Also at Scotch were his brother Stuart ( SC 1971-76 ), and his twin brother , Peter Andrew Burnside ( born 9.2.1963 , SC 1975-80 , died 19.1.2019 ).
While studying Construction Management at RMIT , Malcolm met Margaret Lewandowski . They married on 5 March 1995 at Rippon Lea Estate , Elsternwick . In search of new opportunities , they travelled though South-East Asia . When in Singapore , Malcolm identified the need for an advanced formwork system for high-rise construction . In 1990 , Stairmaster Formwork was incorporated in Singapore . Malcolm spent the next five years living and working in Singapore . The business manufactured and supplied projects across South-East Asia .
Their sons , Alexander and Marcus Burnside , were born in 1997 and 1999 respectively , and attended Brighton Grammar School .
The business was sold in 2006 , and the family packed up and travelled around Europe for a year . In 2007 , a new company was set up in Dubai , United Arab Emirates ( UAE ), to which the family relocated . Its projects were in the UAE , Saudi Arabia , Qatar and Kazakhstan . Malcolm lived and worked in Dubai for nine years , and frequently travelled throughout the UAE and Asia .
Retiring to Australia in 2016 , Malcolm acquired a wagyu beef cattle farm in Molyullah , Victoria . In 2020 he moved to
his beachside house in Forster , New South Wales . Malcolm developed and patented an innovative new formwork design during 2021 . On 12 August 2021 he died at home at Forster .
Malcolm was charismatic , kind , and generous : an adventurer and entrepreneur who lived life to the fullest . His motto was ‘ Life is what you make it ’. He will be greatly missed .
GRAHAM , Kelvin Bruce ( Bruce ) (’ 65 ) Bruce ’ s brother , Ian (’ 59 ), wrote :
Kelvin Bruce Graham was born at Tongala on 30 September 1947 , the son of Old Boy Kenneth Clarence Graham ( born 2.3.1908 , SC 1924-27 , died 28.8.1997 ). After attending Tongala Consolidated School , Bruce boarded at Scotch from 1962 to 1965 in School House as a member of Littlejohn House . Also at Scotch were his brothers Kenneth Peter Graham ( born 28.2.1941 , SC 1954-56 , died 18.2.2018 ) and Ian ( SC 1956-60 ), and uncles Ross McLean Graham ( born 18.8.1906 , SC 1923 , died 20.12.1991 ) and Murray Kelvin Graham ( born 1.1.1912 , SC 1927-28 , died 14.7.1999 ). All were boarders .
Bruce played in the 1963 and 1964 1st XVIIIs , and captained the 1964 1st Tennis team . Due to a near-fatal road accident in Tongala during the 1964 Christmas holidays , his Scotch sporting career was abruptly halted . Named as Captain of the 1965 1st Tennis team and 1st XVIII , he was unable to play in either team , with David Mason ( SC 1962-66 ) the Vice Captain and Acting Captain of the Tennis team , and Rod Gillies ( SC 1961-65 ) the Playing Captain of the 1st XVIII .
A member of the School , House and Chapel choirs , Bruce was also an NCO in the Cadets ’ Assault Pioneers . The 1965 Captain of Littlejohn House and Vice Captain of School House , Bruce was also
a 1965 School Probationer , upgraded that year to a School Prefect .
Bruce worked for five years at stockbroker JB Were , and briefly at a London stockbroking firm . In Melbourne he spent 10 years in airline TAA ’ s finance department , then joined agricultural company AWB . Bruce spent six years at stockbroker Potter Warburg in several sales roles , before retiring in 2005 .
On 19 April 1973 he married June Mays at Scotch . They had three children : Andrew , Brooke and Fiona . Tragically , June died of cancer on 3 September 1988 . Bruce married Mrs Muriel Jean ( nee Moore ) Jarrett at Olinda on 26 February 1994 . In 2006 they moved to Mount Martha , where Bruce was active in the local community , particularly with the Mount Martha Probus Club . After several years of illness , Bruce died on 20 August 2021 at the Peninsula Private Hospital , Frankston , surrounded by his loving family .
HALPIN , Julie Keitha ( Staff 1980-89 ) Much of this obituary , written by Scotch Archivist , Paul Mishura , is based on a letter Julie wrote in 2017 , with comments by Stephen Kong (’ 68 – current staff ) and Doug Galbraith ( staff 1977-2013 )
When Julie Halpin was born on 26 November 1953 a link to Scotch was created , as the doctor attending her birth , Dr Wilfred Ewart Macmillan , was the father of her future boss , Donald Robertson Thomson Macmillan ( born 5.11.1928 , staff 1959-87 , died 19.11.2004 ). They all hailed from Mildura . She did not know why , but she applied for the job of Matron of School House . She was interviewed by Don and his wife Gwen , followed by Principal Philip Anthony Vere Roff ( born 13.9.1938 , Principal 1975-82 , died 27.4.2017 ).
Julie was unable to wear most perfumes , but when a male friend dabbed some aftershave on Julie as a joke , it became her ‘ perfume ’. Only later Julie and Philip Roff realised they were both wearing the same ‘ scent ’, and it was joked that that was how she got the job . When asked why she should get the job in preference to an experienced married woman with children , Julie said she worked with Guides and Scouts , and in live theatre with young
