CLASS OF 2020 DEBUT IN THE AFL
AFL careers launched – Jamarra Ugle-Hagan and Maurice Rioli
Two Old Boys from the Class of 2020 made their debuts in the AFL during the 2021 season – Jamarra Ugle-Hagan ( Western Bulldogs ) and Maurice Rioli Junior ( Richmond ).
Jamarra ( SC 2017-20 ), a key forward who was Scotch ’ s Vice Captain of Football in 2020 , carried the expectation associated with his selection as number one draft pick in the 2020 AFL draft . He is Scotch ’ s first number one draft pick . After acquitting himself well in the VFL during the early part of the 2021 season , in which he kicked 13 goals , Jamarra debuted for the Western Bulldogs against the Sydney Swans at Marvel Stadium on 11 July , and by the end of the home and away season had played five games and kicked seven goals .
Jamarra is only the second Indigenous player to top the AFL draft . Originally contracted to the Bulldogs until 2022 , during 2021 Jamarra signed on for a further two years , reflecting the confidence the Bulldogs have in him as a long-term AFL player .
Maurice Junior ( SC 2018-20 ), a small forward , is the son of Maurice Rioli , who played 118 games for Richmond from 1982-87 , and was elected posthumously to the Australian Football Hall of
Fame in 2016 . Richmond took Maurice Junior as their second pick ( at 51 ) under the AFL ’ s father-son rule in the 2020 national draft . Maurice is described on the Richmond website as ‘ full of talent , and will bring speed , excitement , a fiery defensive intent , and innate goal sense to our group ’.
After several games in the VFL , during which he was in contention for the league ' s goal of the year award with a 90-metre sprint goal against the Northern Bullants , Maurice was selected for his first senior game , against North Melbourne at the MCG in round 21 on 7 August . He played one further senior game for the Tigers before their season concluded .
