techniques allows him to create rich , illusionistic surfaces with chinagraph , silver oxide , graphite and pastel dust .
Godwin has held more than 40 solo exhibitions since 1977 , including ‘ The Metaphysical Body – A Survey ’. His work has been shown at the Art Gallery of NSW in the Dobell Drawing Award , the national award for drawing in Australia . Godwin won that prize in 1998 and has subsequently been included a further 11 times . He recently exhibited at La Capitale Galerie in Paris , and is currently working towards an exhibition of drawings to be held at James Makin Gallery in September .
His work is held in permanent collections , including the National Gallery of Australia , the National Gallery of Victoria , the Art Gallery of NSW , the Art Gallery of South Australia , Parliament House in Canberra , Lim Lip Museum ( Korea ), the Korean Art Institute , the University of Western Carolina ( USA ) and in other public and private collections .
Godwin graduated as a Bachelor of Education ( Art / Craft ) at the Melbourne College of Advanced Education and as a Master of Art at RMIT University . Apart from his practice , he lectured in drawing and painting at various institutions , including the Victorian College of the Arts and Monash University . From 2005 until 2010 he was Head of Drawing at the School of Art , RMIT University .
Godwin was at Scotch for 10 days over a three-week period in May . During his residency he worked closely with senior students , engaging them in discussion about their own work , and introducing new processes and practices during classes . He spoke of his inspirations in his professional career , and showed examples of his past and current work . He also guided several classes through collaborative mural projects , which were then displayed in the Lithgow Centre and the Keon-Cohen Dining Hall .
