and Amberley Bremner . The Basse Danse from Warlock ’ s Capriol Suite was followed by an arrangement of Tchaikovsky ’ s Serenade for Strings , and then an astonishing and spectacular arrangement of Lord of the Dance , with Adam Pai ( Year 12 ) on drum kit . It was a thrilling performance .
The Intermediate Concert Band , expertly conducted by Megan Philip , performed movie themes by John Williams , and a lovely arrangement of Mussorgsky ’ s Night on Bald Mountain by Michael Sweeney . A delightful interlude followed – a haunting rendition of the theme from Schindler ’ s List performed by a string octet comprising Richard Cheasley , Thomas Cherk , Joshua Hunter , Timothy Lew , Ivan Luk , Matthew Scouller
( all Year 8 ) and Neil Wang ( Year 9 ), led by Amberley Bremner . Daniel Zisin concluded the concert , leading the Callantina Swing Band through a lively performance of Smackwater Jack .
The largest concert of the season took place on 19 May . It opened with the Academy Strings performing Max Bruch ’ s Serenade on Swedish Themes , followed by the finale from Tchaikovsky ’ s Serenade for Strings . Both works were performed with precision and conviction , conducted by the Head of Strings , Ben Castle .
The Show Band followed , reprising its program from the All-State Jazz Championships ( see an article about the championships elsewhere in this edition ),
directed by Megan Philip . Notable solos were performed by trumpeter Max Kelly ( Year 11 ), saxophonists Will McCann , Ben Garson ( both Year 12 ) and Zavier Tang ( Year 11 ), Joshua Munday ( Year 11 ) on trombone , Thomas Law ( Year 12 ) on piano , Eddy Yang ( Year 12 ) on guitar , and Adam Pai ( Year 12 ) on drums . Vibrant performances all round !
The rest of the concert featured our singers under the assured and insightful direction of Andrew Hunter . The College Choir , having rehearsed at Choir Camp ( see an article about Choir Camp elsewhere in this edition ), opened with a beautiful performance of John Rutter ’ s For the Beauty of the Earth , followed by Gift to be Free and
