Smyth Draffin ( born 3.3.1872 , SC 1887 , died 12.8.1911 ).
Other Scotchies included his brothers Robert Campbell Draffin ( born 3.10.1930 , SC 1944-48 , died 18.5.1991 ) and Bruce ( SC 1952-57 ), and cousins Brian John Draffin ( born 26.12.1931 , SC 1944-48 , died 4.2.2019 ), Don ( SC 1955-59 ) and John Draffin ( SC 1955-64 ). Doug ’ s son , Jonathan , attended Scotch , ( SC 1982-88 ), as do his grandsons Wilson ( Year 8 ) and Gilbert Crawford ( Year 4 ).
On 23 November 1968 Doug married Margaret Isobel ( Margie ) Adamson at Scotch .
Early in his career , Doug worked for John Danks & Son Pty Ltd and studied industrial design at RMIT . The family ’ s manufacturing business was known as Draffin Bros . until its public listing in 1950 as Draffin Everhot Limited ( of which Draffin Bros . Pty Ltd became a subsidiary ). Doug joined the new entity as its Marketing and Design Director . In the early 1970s , Doug was appointed Chairman and Managing Director , positions he held for nearly a decade until the company ’ s sale in 1981 to Vulcan ( now Rheem ). Following Draffin Everhot ’ s sale , Doug made a successful career switch to become an antique dealer , opening Creswick Antiques , which specialised in English Georgian furniture . He ran the business for 22 years .
A founding member of Scotch ’ s Koomerang Ski Club , Doug was involved for many decades in the club ’ s development and its significant expansion to four mountains . ( See a related article in the OSCA clubs section of this issue .)
Doug died on 28 April 2021 at Cabrini Palliative Care , Prahran . He leaves behind a network of family and friends , all of whom are skiing enthusiasts .
FERGUSON , Roderick McKenzie (’ 55 )
Rod ’ s brother , Colin (’ 62 ), wrote :
Roderick McKenzie Ferguson was born at Melbourne on
24 October 1937 , the son of Ian McKenzie Ferguson ( born 20.8.1906 , SC 1922 , died 4.8.1985 ) and Heather Helend Alicia ( nee Buchanan ) Ferguson . He left Ruffy State School to board at Scotch from 1948 to 1955 in McMeckan ( 1948-51 ) and Arthur Robinson Houses ( 1951-55 ). Rod was a member of the 1954 and 1955 2nd XI , and the 1955 1st XVIII . His brother Colin ( SC 1955-62 ) attended Scotch , with the earliest of many Scotchies in their family being their great-uncle , Frederick William Dodgshun ( born 14.10.1862 , SC 1871-88 , died 20.12.1929 ).
Returning to the family farm , ‘ Strathearn ’, at Ruffy , near Euroa , Rod commenced a major rebuilding program with his father and brother . Merino sheep trials helped improve pastures with additional superphosphate , which the Victorian Department of Agriculture also trialled .
Sheep and cattle interests saw Rod acquiring properties at Ivanhoe and Holbrook in New South Wales , and at Deans Marsh . He bought and sold stock throughout Australia , and was one of the first to buy store cattle and sheep in Tasmania for transport by boat to the mainland .
Rod made the Melbourne Football Club ’ s 1958 final list , but injury spoiled his prospects . It was one of seven VFL clubs seeking his services . He played football for Euroa and Longwood , winning six Euroa premierships between 1957 and 1964 . A member of the Euroa District Cricket Association Country Week team which won two Provincial Group premierships , in 1964 Rod played against South Africa for a Country XI at Benalla . The South African Vice Captain commended Rod for the best outfielding he had seen .
Rod enjoyed playing competitive golf with mates at Barwon Heads . A very outgoing personality , Rod greatly appreciated the people he worked with . He loved yarning with business associates and friends at Newmarket and other saleyards .
On 10 May 1961 Rod married Jennifer Ann Dobson at Scotch . Their sons Andrew ( SC 1976-79 ) and Duncan ( SC 1978-81 ) attended Scotch . They had a daughter , Caroline .
Rod returned to Euroa in 2018 , and lived at the Currie Homes , where he died suddenly on 29 August 2020 .
GODDARD , Hamish Ian (’ 98 )
Hamish ’ s father , Ian (’ 67 ), wrote :
Hamish was born at Malvern on 4 July 1980 , the son of Ian Goddard ( SC 1962-67 ). Also at Scotch were his cousin William Green ( SC 1992-2001 ), uncle Bruce Goddard ( SC 1962-68 ) and second cousins Andrew and David Yule ( both SC 1996-2001 ).
Following his primary schooling at St Leonard ’ s College in Brighton , Hamish attended Scotch from 1993 to 1998 . A School Officer in 1998 , he fully enjoyed his years at Scotch , where he was a rower and soccer player . He was also a keen member of the Cadet corps for four years , finishing as a Cadet Under Officer in the Engineering wing of the Support Company , a role in which he took much pride .
Hamish studied information technology , and , following several industry roles , he worked as the General Manager of Yarris Technologies . He was responsible for developing customer relationships , product road maps and designing innovations for Yarris technology platforms .
Cadets certainly rubbed off on him , as he became a passionate member of the Army Reserve , firstly as a sapper and then an engineering corporal , and , more recently , undertaking officer training as a Staff Cadet . Through these roles he took part in several community assistance programs , most notably flood and bushfire responses .
On 1 December 2007 Hamish married Giorgia Trigila at East Malvern , and they became the proud parents of Gabriel and Isla , establishing a beautiful family home in Sassafras , surrounded by nature .
Hamish died suddenly as a result of an unexpected health incident at home at Sassafras on 18 March 2021 . An overflowing memorial service was held to commemorate a kind and gentle man who left such a strong impression on all those lucky enough to come into contact with him .
