COPING WITH THE PANDEMIC : AN INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

As countries around the world have tackled the COVID-19 pandemic , members of the Scotch Family living overseas have had to cope with its implications in differing ways , depending on the impact of COVID-19 on the countries where they live .
Great Scot contacted several Old Boys living overseas to gauge their responses to COVID-19 . Here is what they told us . NICK MALON (’ 07 ) – New York City , USA Since the start of the year , life in New York has returned to normal – the vaccine has made a huge difference . We are now back in offices and enjoying the vibrancy of New York City once again . As an Australian living in New York , I have great hopes for Australia going into the end of the year , and look forward to visitors from Australia returning soon .
I feel very fortunate to have been able to travel over the summer months , including a recent trip to Alaska , and I hope to be able to visit Australia again soon . I send my best wishes to all in the Scotch community in Australia . ANDREW PENMAN (’ 05 ) – New York City , USA We moved from London in 2019 , and shortly after that the pandemic put a sudden pause on our new life in New York City . It was a harrowing first few months adjusting to life in near isolation , as the city was hit particularly hard by the virus . From our window we could see the SS Comfort navy hospital ship on the Hudson River , which was sent here as an emergency hospital , and the pop-up hospital tents in Central Park .
My wife , Emily , and I have both been working from our Upper West Side apartment since the escalation of the pandemic , albeit moving within the building to a bigger space which brought some reprieve for a newly married couple ! Thankfully , Central Park is a close walk away and a daily destination , keeping us particularly sane in those early days of the virus when everything was closed , and it felt like the city had all but cleared out .
Although there are still no signs of us returning to the office , and most of the midtown offices remain near empty , the city has
