DAVIS McCARTHY Melbourne , Australia - Spent seven years in the UK with wife Isabel - Completed a DPhil at Oxford - Currently a Lab Head at St Vincent ’ s Institute of Medical Research
CHRISTOPHER CHONG Melbourne , Australia - Worked and lived across the UK , Denmark , Malaysia and Australia - Worked as physiotherapist across Australia , UK and Malaysia , including management of a London private practice - Research project with the United Nations in Malaysia - Conducts osteoarthritis research through La Trobe University - Volunteer , Manningham SES
The Class of 2003 provided a high benchmark as a graduating class from Scotch College in both their achievements while at Scotch , and beyond graduation . Nearly 20 years after leaving , a small collective of Old Boys with a shared bond of German language studies reunited together via Zoom , under true pandemic lockdown conditions .
Now based across three continents , and with most of these young men having spent significant periods of their professional and personal life across all corners of the world , a COVID lockdown created an ideal opportunity to reflect on their school journey together , and where their paths have since taken them .
The German class of 2003 , taught by Ms Elaine Tarran , provided the first opportunities for many of the boys to experience life in Germany , with Stewart Morrison , Michael Roy , David Heaton , Davis McCarthy , Hayden Gyles , Cameron Sim , James Hillis and James Munro having earned exchange scholarships .
Over the years these young men have continued to maintain close ties with German-speaking countries , with Stewart Morrison undertaking further specialist surgical training in Stuttgart and Hayden Gyles having taught German for more than 10 years . James Munro lives and works in Switzerland , and David Heaton and Christopher Chong continue to use German as a language in their respective careers as barrister and physiotherapist .
The achievements of this class beyond their time at Scotch are equally significant . Notable pursuits , including a DPhil at Oxford , medical research discoveries , achievements at the Royal Children ’ s Hospital , the United Nations , the Australian Defence Force and the RAAF , and a PhD in automotive aerodynamics highlight just how varied the experience of these young men has been across professional areas of law , engineering , medicine , education , defence and science .
The shared experience of language studies at Scotch has not only cultivated linguistic talents , but provided the foundation for lifelong interests in learning , cultural awareness , lasting friendships and global connections .
The Class of 2003 produced four Duces with a perfect ENTER of 99.95 , one of whom was David Heaton . David and Davis McCarthy were also rewarded with National University of Melbourne Scholarships . Moreover , it was an outstanding academic year for the entire graduating class under the guidance of Head of Year 12 , Mr Neil Cracknell .
This recent Zoom reunion was prompted by a chance encounter by Christopher Chong , a physiotherapist , who treated former Great Scot Editor and OSCA Executive Director Leigh McGregor (’ 55 ).
