STEINWAY RECITAL BEATS

LOCKDOWN FIVE
PIANO STUDENTS RELISH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM TO AN AUDIENCE
It was incredibly fortunate the 2021 Steinway Recital was able to proceed on Thursday 15 July , just a few hours before the state ’ s fifth lockdown . It was originally scheduled in early June , and was postponed due to previous lockdown restrictions .
With the global pandemic having exerted its heavy influence into a second year , our Music School faced the continuing trials of ‘ Zooming ’ and its myriad of necessary adjustments . The testing of microphones , speakers and , of course , the temperamental internet connection , in addition to constant rescheduling of lessons , and scanning
and emailing music scores became part of our ‘ new normal ’. One of the highly valued experiences for our students is the opportunity to perform to an audience , and , sadly , several of our usual scheduled concerts were unable to be held .
In the Junior School , students recorded themselves performing at home , and uploaded their video via Seesaw .
The Senior School boys played to each other via Zoom , and endured the risk of ‘ lagging ’ or dropping out altogether . Despite these challenges , boys and teachers alike applied themselves to making the most of this new way of learning and teaching .
The Steinway Recital , an annual event in the School ’ s concert calendar , was inaugurated in 2013 with the intention of featuring boys who , in the opinion of their teachers , have made particularly outstanding progress , irrespective of their level of attainment .
A light drizzle fell on the school grounds while this select group of young musicians , their parents and teachers , gathered in Ian Roach Hall for this year ’ s first piano performance to be held live .
