HILLS , Richard George Watherston (’ 89 )
Richard ’ s wife , Samantha , wrote :
Richard George Watherston Hills was born at Melbourne on 16 January 1972 , the son of David George Watherston Hills ( SC 1957-59 ) and his wife Patricia Louise ( nee Devereux ) Hills . His brother is Robert ( Robbie ) ( SC 1982-87 ) and his sister is Kristin .
Known as Richie , he attended Scotch from 1984 to 1989 , spending three years as a boarder in McMeckan House . Richie was in Monash , Littlejohn ( while a boarder ) and Eggleston Houses . He coxed the 1989 1st VIII and was a member of the 1989 1st Hockey XI . He was a 1989 School Officer . Also at Scotch were his uncles Andrew ( SC 1960-63 ) and Simon ( SC 1965-70 ).
Richie made many enduring friendships before completing a Bachelor of Engineering ( Chemical Engineering ) and a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University in 1994 .
In 1996 , Richie commenced as an engineer with WMC Resources at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter . He had a couple of business analyst roles with the company in Western Australia before returning to Melbourne in 2000 as a Treasury Analyst . Richie was Assistant Treasurer with WMC from 2004 to 2005 .
Richie married Samantha Westgarth ( Sam ) Kimpton on 24 April 2006 at St John ’ s Anglican Church , Flinders . Their son , Edward ( Ed ), is in Year 8 at Scotch , with Lachlan booked to attend , and Claire is their daughter . Sam ’ s great-great-greatgrandfather , the Rev . James Forbes , founded Scotch .
From 2005 to 2016 , Richie worked for Transurban in various corporate finance and treasury roles , culminating in being Corporate Treasurer .
In 2017 , Richie took a break to spend more time with family , and to find a role which gave a better work / life balance . He became Executive Manager , Corporate Finance , with Pacific Hydro in 2018 .
Richie was a dedicated hockey player , playing at the Old Scotch ( now Hawthorn ) Hockey Club , and then at the Kew Hockey Club . He was also a keen runner and cyclist .
Diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer in 2019 , Richie tried multiple treatments before succumbing to his illness at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre , Parkville , on 28 February 2021 , aged only 49 . The grace , bravery and strength that he exhibited throughout his cancer journey were an inspiration to those around him .
MACMILLAN , John Thomson (’ 50 ) John ’ s son , Robert (‘ 82 ), wrote : John was born at Surrey Hills on 3 July 1933 . He attended Canterbury State School and then Scotch from 1944 to 1950 . Also at Scotch , among others , were his brother Hamish Eager Thomson ( born 1.9.1936 , SC 1946-53 , died 4.6.2015 ), sons Andrew ( SC 1973-79 ) and Robert ( SC 1977-82 ), nephews Jamie ( SC 1976-81 ), Cameron ( SC 1981-87 ) and Peter ( SC 1986-91 ), and grandsons Jamie ( SC 2004-09 ), Tim ( SC 2007-12 ), Angus ( SC 2014-19 ) and Ned ( Year 9 ). His cousin , Donald Robertson Thomson Macmillan ( born 5.1.1928 , died 19.11.2004 ), taught at Scotch from 1959 to 1987 .
In 1955 John graduated from Melbourne University with a Bachelor of Laws . He had a passion for the law and advising his clients , running his own firms and practising for over 60 years until retiring in 2018 . On 7 June 1958 John married Helen Mary Macgibbon at Canterbury Presbyterian Church . Their marriage ended with her death on 3 February 2021 . In addition to their Scotch sons and grandsons , they had daughters Sue and Wendy , and six other grandchildren . John was involved in all parts of his family ’ s life .
Sport and the Presbyterian and Uniting churches were central to John ’ s life . After Scotch he played cricket for 32 years and helped establish the St Andrew ’ s Cricket Club in Heathmont . He spent more than 15 years on the Ringwood and District Cricket Association Executive Council ( RDCA ). In 2011 it named a competition the John Macmillan Shield . Cricket Victoria formally recognised John in 2014 for more than 50 years of service to Victorian cricket . John also played competitive tennis at High Street Road Uniting Church Tennis Club for over 40 years and was a member of its committee for 20 years .
John was committed to the Presbyterian and Uniting churches , as both a parishioner and a member of the Mount Waverley Uniting Church Council for 20 years . He took great pride in volunteering his legal skills to the church and parishioners throughout his career .
John died on 1 April 2021 at the Weary Dunlop Retirement Village , Wheelers Hill . He leaves a legacy of love for his family and giving back to his communities .
MARCARD , John Heinrich Matthias (’ 56 )
John ’ s family wrote :
John was born at Richmond on 10 January 1940 , the son of Heinrich Matthias and Louise Marjorie ( nee Vickers ) Marcard . He attended Scotch College from 1948 to 1957 . A member of Morrison House , he was a 1957 Probationer . John served as a Cadet and was 1957 Co-Editor of Satura . Dux of German in 1956 , in 1957 John was Dux of both German and Accounting , receiving First Class Honours in Matriculation for German .
John completed a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne , graduating in 1962 , during which he developed a lifelong love of billiards and snooker . He began his chartered accounting career at Wilson Bishop Bowes and Craig , later working in London and San Francisco before becoming a partner . The firm changed names to PKF and later BDO , where he consulted until quite recently . John was a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and for many years he was the auditor of both Scotch and the Old Scotch Collegians ’ Association .
In 1962 John met Merilyn May ( Mal ) Brewster and they married at Scotch on 21 May 1966 . They have two children – Jonathan ( Jon ) ( SC 1976-87 ) and Sophie .
