TWO ANNIVERSARIES FOR SOCCER CLUB
This year marks both the 40th anniversary of the Old Scotch Soccer Club and the 50th anniversary of soccer at Scotch . It ’ s an extra cause for celebration , on top of actually being allowed to play again !
The Saturday season started on 27 March and the Sunday season gets under way this month , but it ’ s not too late to be part of it all – the club has six senior Saturday and Sunday teams and new players are always welcome , no matter their standard or age . The club is open to all , not just to Old Scotch Collegians .
We play at H A Smith Reserve on Saturdays and Sundays , and there are veterans ’ and social teams ( four teams in all ). We also have junior teams playing on Sundays . Among the seniors and reserves coaches are Scotch alumni Eamonn Beamish (’ 79 ) and Rod Byrnes (’ 77 ).
On Easter Saturday , 3 April , the club participated in one of the biggest games in its history , when it took on the Melbourne Knights in round four of the FFA Cup at H A Smith Reserve . On paper it was an unequal contest , as the Knights are semi-professional , competing in National Premier Leagues , while Old Scotch plays in State League East , section two .
In a valiant effort , Old Scotch held the Knights scoreless in the first half . The second half was also tight , except for a 20-minute flurry of three goals by the Knights , setting up a 3-0 final scoreline . Knights ’ President , Pave Jesup , described Old Scotch as ‘ a great bunch of people ’ and our club responded in kind , thanking the Knights and their supporters for a great day , and wishing them well for the remainder of the season .
