A CONTINUING FOCUS ON BUILDING THE SCHOOL

Balancing Scotch ' s educational and physical development
As the 2021 school year gets underway , we rejoice in the vibrancy of boys back on campus . Across Australia and indeed the world , we can now hope that the development and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines will allow us a return to a mode of operation we once took for granted .
While 2020 offered many challenges for our School , our boys , their families and the broader community , we should not miss the opportunity to reflect on , and learn from , the invaluable qualities of resilience and determination that were very much on display . Undoubtedly previous generations learned the importance of these qualities , as they confronted a common enemy in World Wars and the hardships of economic loss stemming from the 1930s Depression .
Having assumed the Chairmanship of Scotch Council last December , I count myself as fortunate in having witnessed firsthand the difference strong and effective leadership can make in difficult times . With the Hon . Dr David Kemp AC (’ 59 ) at the helm of School Council and Mr Tom Batty in the Principal ’ s position , Scotch has been indeed blessed . Drawing on all the best of Scotch ’ s values and traditions , our community has emerged from the crisis in sound shape , albeit that we all have a story to tell .
The central theme of the approach taken by the former Chairman and current Principal , was that we all needed to bear some pain in order for the Scotch community to emerge intact from the crisis . Four key observations bear out the success of that approach :
