A member of Morrison House , David attended Scotch from 1948 to 1960 . He was a member of the 1953 Junior School Athletics team , and the 1957-60 Athletics teams , which won in 1958 and 1959 .
David was an excellent athlete , unbeaten in the 100 and 220 yards from under 7 to under 17 . His 1959 record of 100 yards in 10.0 secs , converted to 10.95 for 100m , remains the Scotch record . David ran for the Old Scotch Athletics Club , with injury preventing selection for the 1962 Commonwealth Games .
Following an advertising career , David relocated to country New South Wales as a radio presenter at Moree radio station 2VM in the early 1980s . For 15 years from 1984 he was the newsreader at Prime TV Tamworth . David moved to ABC Local Radio , New South Wales , in 1999 , presenting Saturday Breakfast until retiring in 2014 .
David stood for the state seat of Tamworth . He was a great contributor to the local community : participating in annual mountain bike rides to raise funds for the Westpac rescue helicopter , supporting the Black Dog Institute , regularly speaking at Toastmasters , and as a sought-after guest speaker .
A passionate horseman , endurance rider and historian , David joined a Light Horse reenactment troop , regularly riding in Anzac re-enactment rides . Inspired by the story of the horses sent overseas in World War I that never returned , he launched a 2000 appeal , resulting in the Tamworth Waler Memorial being unveiled in 2005 .
David was awarded an OAM in 2007 for his dedicated work as the originator and chairman of the memorial to the Australian Light Horse ; for work with the Australian Light Horse re-enactment riding movement ; for service to the New England North-West Rescue Helicopter Service ; and for service to radio and television over more than 30 years .
David died at Korumburra on 31 December 2020 . He is missed by his family and community .
FEARN- WANNAN , Dr Howard James OAM (’ 47 ) Howard ’ s son , David (’ 76 ), wrote :
Dr Howard James Fearn-Wannan was born at Ringwood on 30 November 1929 . He attended Deepdene State School and then Scotch from 1942 to 1948 , following his cousin , Allan John Fearn-Wannan ( born 11.6.1923 , SC 1938-39 , died 8.9.2003 ).
Howard was a member of the choir in 1944 , and the 1948 Library Committee . He said Scotch instilled in him a lifelong love of learning , teaching and music . Graduating from Melbourne University ( 1952 ) with a Bachelor of Science and a Diploma of Education , Howard taught at Bairnsdale High School , Methodist Ladies ’ College ( where he became Head of Science ), and Mercer House Teachers ’ College .
In 1969 Howard moved to RMIT , first as a biology lecturer , and later as Head of the Educational Research and Development Unit . Howard never stopped learning and researching , and completed Masters degrees in Science and Education . Motivated by concerns about student dissatisfaction , attrition and high tertiary failure rates , he completed a PhD researching factors affecting tertiary students ’ performance .
Howard was inspired in his lifelong love of music as a singer , conductor and musical theatre performer by Scotch ’ s inaugural Director of Music , Lionel Albert Jack ‘ John ’ Bishop ( born 26.10.1903 , staff 1937-47 , died 14.12.1964 ). He led numerous church choirs and orchestras , and played principal parts in several Savoy Opera Company productions .
With a deep faith in God motivating a passion for social justice , Howard was instrumental in establishing Habitat for Humanity in Australia , serving as a board member and founding President for 15 years . He was a member of the Baptist Union of Victoria ’ s Executive Council for three years , including one term as
President , and was President of Strathcona Baptist Girls ’ Grammar School council for 10 years .
On Australia Day 2016 he received the Medal of the Order of Australia ‘ for service to social welfare organisations and to the Baptist Union of Victoria .’
Howard married Helen Margaret Terrell at the Armadale Methodist Church on 13 January 1955 . Their three sons , David ( SC 1971-76 ), Andrew ( SC 1973-77 ) and Alan ( SC 1976-81 ) were followed by eight grandchildren , including Anthony ( SC 2002-08 ), and one great-grandson .
Howard died on Christmas Day , 2020 , at the Maroondah Hospital , Ringwood .
GILFILLAN , Kenneth Struan OAM ( Struan ) (' 51 ) Struan ' s son , Angus (' 91 ), wrote :
Kenneth Struan Gilfillan was born on 15 July 1933 at the Jessie McPherson Community Hospital , Melbourne . Known as Struan , he attended Malvern Grammar School ( 1943-45 ) and then Scotch from 1946 to 1951 as a member of Lawson-MacFarland House . Also at Scotch were his brother Jock ( SC 1947-53 ), sons Andrew ( SC 1973-82 ), James ( SC 1977-85 ) and Angus ( SC 1980-91 ), and grandson Hugo Anderson ( Year 9 ), the son of Wes Anderson ( SC 1981-87 ).
Struan was a member of the 1950 2nd XI and 1951 1st XI , and the 1951 2nd XVIII . He was a Cadet Lieutenant in the Cadet Corps . Struan made many lifelong friends at Scotch .
He attended RMIT and Melbourne University , graduating in Architecture in 1956 . As a student , he met his beloved wife , Janet-Lyn Bride , and they married at Scotch on 1 November 1958 .
Struan enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an architect with Bates Smart in Melbourne . He was appointed an Associate in 1966 and Partner in 1970 . His legacy includes some of Melbourne ' s most prominent buildings , including Orica
