LONG-SERVING SCHOOL COUNCILLOR BRIAN BAYSTON OAM (’ 47 ) RETIRES
Many years of dedicated service to Scotch
Brian Bayston OAM (’ 47 ) has retired from School Council , after many years of dedicated service to the Council and to Scotch . Brian served on the Council from 1980 to 1985 , and from 1996 until his retirement at the end of 2020 .
Brian attended Scotch from 1936-48 as a member of Monash House . He was Dux of the Junior School in 1942 . In 1947 Brian was awarded the Lionel Robinson Scholarship , and in his final year of 1948 , he was a member of the Library Committee , and was awarded a Government Senior Scholarship . An employee consultant and former Senior Partner at McCracken & McCracken , solicitors , among many appointments Brian has been a board member of the
Australian Institute of Archaeology , the Melbourne School of Theology , Gospel Hall Incorporated and the council of Presbyterian Ladies ’ College . He is a former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria ( the first non-clerical appointee to this position ), and a former member of sessions at Scots ’ Church .
Brian has been a member of the councils of the Bible Society in Australia ( past Chairman ), the Bible Society in Australia ( Victoria – past Chairman ), the World Evangelical Alliance ( past Secretary ), and the Australian Evangelical Alliance ( past Chairman ).
In the 2004 Queen ’ s Birthday honours , Brian received a Medal of the Order of
Australia award ( OAM ) for service to the community through a range of religious and educational organisations , particularly the Presbyterian Church of Victoria .
Brian married Helen Denise Laxton in the Littlejohn Memorial Chapel on 16 July 1960 . Their sons , Martin (’ 81 ), Hamish (’ 82 ) and Alister (’ 85 ) attended Scotch . Their grandson , Gabriel Bayston , is enrolled as a future Scotch student .
Among Brian ’ s recreational interests are genealogy , reading , travel and films .
Scotch is grateful to Brian for his long period of excellent service , and wishes Brian and Helen well for the future .
