PARKER , John Guy (’ 63 ) John ’ s classmate , David Temple (’ 63 ), wrote : John Parker was born at East Melbourne on 12 December 1945 . He attended Scotch from 1959 to 1964 as a member of Gilray House . He moved permanently from the under 14C football team to the A team after a single game . That year , he won the 100 and 220 yard sprints at the House Sports .
John was a member of the 1960 and 1961 Athletics teams , the 1962 and 1964 1st XVIIIs , and the 1964 2nd Tennis team . He was a leader of Scotch ’ s Social Services – his work at the Lady Herring Centre with handicapped people was appreciated and admired . A 1963 Probationer , John was a 1964 Prefect . First Matriculating in 1963 , in 1964 John was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship , gaining honours in Chemistry and Pure Mathematics .
Also at Scotch were John ’ s son Andrew ( SC 1988-95 ) and nephew Michael Crossland ( SC 1989-94 ).
John graduated from Melbourne University with a degree in Chemical Engineering ( 1969 ), and a Master of Environmental Science from the University of Texas ( 1976 ).
On 11 February 1969 John married Susan Elizabeth Waterworth at Scotch . They had a daughter , Elizabeth .
Called up for National Service , John graduated ( second lieutenant ) from Scheyville Officer Training Unit , then served with the Signal Corps ( 1970-71 ).
In 1973 , John joined his father ’ s business , Water Science Laboratories , taking over following his father ’ s death in
1981 . John grew the business significantly , earning a reputation for industry leadership and innovation , and received a prestigious award for engineering design and environmental excellence . John was a much admired director who had the ability to connect with and lead his staff , which was 100 strong at his retirement in 2004 .
A proud family man , John exemplified values of loyalty , respect , leadership and integrity . He had a wide friendship group and was appreciated for his talents , compassion and sense of humour . He maintained his many Scotch friendships , and is remembered as a warm , talented and caring gentleman .
In retirement , John and Sue travelled widely . He enjoyed golf at Riversdale and Sorrento , and playing tennis at Kooyong . John died at the Royal Melbourne
Hospital , Parkville , on 5 August 2020 .

The Great Scot obituaries column is a significant section of the magazine , recording the dates of birth , death and ( where applicable ) the Scotch attendance years of all current and past students , staff , School Council members , and others who have made a significant contribution to Scotch College , the Old Scotch Collegians ’ Association or to the wider community .
THE SCHOOL ’ S POLICIES FOR GREAT SCOT OBITUARIES ARE :
• The names , Scotch attendance years ( where applicable ) and dates of birth and death of current and past students , staff , and School Council members will be listed in the Great Scot obituaries column .
• Family members or friends are invited to submit obituaries for editing by the Archivist and the Great Scot editorial team . All edited obituaries will be sent to originators for approval , to help ensure that obituaries are an accurate , relevant and interesting record of Scotch Family members ’ lives .
• Only spouses for whom full marriage details ( full maiden name and exact date and place of marriage ) are supplied will be included .
• Reference will be made to multi-generational Scotch connections ( e . g ., son , father , grandfather , great-grandfather ).
• Special tributes recognising Scotch Family members who have made an outstanding contribution to Scotch College , the Old Scotch Collegians ’ Association , or to the wider community will be initiated by the Great Scot editorial team . In these tributes , the School will seek to include material , including reflections , quotes and photographs , from family or friends , and from other sources .
• Scotch College takes no responsibility for the accuracy of information supplied by family members or friends , other than information which can be confirmed by Scotch College records .
• Obituaries are limited to 350 words , with the exception of those for very noteworthy people as determined at the discretion of the Great Scot editorial committee .
• Photographs of Old Boys should ideally be from their time at Scotch , and should be sent as TIF files with a resolution of 300 dpi for photographs 6 inches x 4 inches , or 600 dpi for a smaller photograph . Alternatively , original photos can be donated , delivered or mailed to the Archivist for scanning ( and return , if not donated to the School ).
